First, congratulations on your 2 1/2" 66-1 Combat Magnum. These snub nosed K frames are getting harder to find, especially the earlier ones. Your 66-1 was the last version to have both the pinned barrel and recessed cylinder (P&R). Did yours come with the factory magna stocks? Original box and docs?
According to the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson - 3rd Edition, your 66-1 w/ serial number 25K6543 was most likely produced in 1978.
I hope this information is what you were looking for!
Post up some pictures if you get a chance. There are a lot of us who really enjoy the Combat Magnums. Especially the snubbies. Here is a picture of my 66-1 and my 19-3...
MacA,
Thanks for the information you provided and the picture of your 66-1 is exactly like mine in appearence. I picked up the 66-1 from the family of a deceased LEO (a brother officer) and it was truly a gun safe "closet queen" for $500. Because of the condition, I would estimate less than 100 rounds went through it. Box & all papers came with it........
What a great purchase. Not only a VERY GOOD price, but the fact of who originally owned it holds a special place in your heart! Congrats!!

I should have added that the $500 included shipping and insurance and the fee to a FFL holder including the state background check. I figured the gun cost about $425 excluding the fee's.
Very, very nice. I am still looking for "my" snub 66. I have a 6" 66-1, a 2.5" 19-3, and a 2.5" 19-6 so I am all around it but no snub 66. I will find one though.

Re: Looking for information on my Smith & Wesson Model 66-1
Troops!
I am the proud owner of a Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum 2.5" Model 66-1. I managed to get it for a song & dance($500.00). I'm trying to find out the date this masterpiece was made. It also looks like the barrel is not the original as I see a slight difference in the finish in the barrel as opposed to the frame. The serial number is 96K9115. It came with an original box & paper work & cleaning kit as well (the serial numbers do not match and the box states it was for a 4" 66-1). Any help would be greatly appreciated!
My M66-1 snubbie is my most carried non J-Frame revolver.
Dates to 1980. Shoots like atarget revolver and balances like a dream.
I paid $225 for it about 14 years ago.
It's on my hip right now.

just purchased a 66-2 snubbie made in "82".... is in great condition and feel I got it at a great price...$450.... one of those "in the right place at the right time" deals.... GOOD KARMA
The first pistol I ever shot, I was 9 yoa and it was my daddies 66-1. Sat me on my backside LOL... Daddy passed in 2000 and my brother got that gun. I have wanted one (literally) for years. Not the best picture but I got a late b-day present from the boyfriend... Don't have the serial number handy right now but I LOVE my new carry 66-1!https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.n...9547f1ec9f9dab
I obtained this gun from a friend who was terminally ill from cancer and he gave it to me as a gift to remember him. I have been offered up to 400.00 for it but will never part with it since it was a gift. But I would like to know when it was manufactured by S&W.

Welcome to the forum, lots of good knowledgeable folks here. Your revolver was made in 1979.
Hey guys, I was wondering what information I could gain from this serial number and model number of the Beautiful 357 Magnum my father passed down to me after his passing recently. Its a S&W model 66-1 with serial number 64k8589. Any information would be awesome. It has wooden handles on it and is Stainless steele and appears to be in excellent condition.
First of all, welcome to the S&W Forum! Sorry to hear about your late father, my sincere condolences. He certainly left you with a nice, desirable pinned and recessed model 66-1.
Serial number 64K85xx likely shipped from Smith and Wesson in the first half of 1980. Value can range quite a bit on these, depending on condition first and foremost, followed by barrel length, completeness, and location.
66's for the most part, shipped with (3) barrel lengths: 2.5" , 4" , and 6". The 2.5" snub is currently the most sought after model and will bring the most money. The 2.5" came in a round butt configuration equipped with magna/service stocks. Again for the most part, the 4" and 6" came with a square butt with target stocks or the lesser common service stocks.
What length barrel is your 66-1? Do you have the original blue, 2-piece box with paperwork/tools?
We do like pictures here on the forum; feel free to upload a few.
Hope this helps you.

Thank you for the information and the thoughts on passing of my father.
The 66-1 has a 4" barrel. I do not have the blue box. It has square butt wood handles. Orange insert in the front sight and rear sight seems to be adjustable.
What does it mean "pinned and recessed". I am not totally new to firearms/pistols but not familiar with revolvers at all. " Completeness"? Not sure what you mean by that either. I am attempting to upload some photos as well.
Thank you for the info so far.

Reason: adding pictures
That's a nice looking 66. Wood stocks look to be correct and likely original. The case is not original, however it serves its purpose. The rear sight would be adjustable, and the front sight ramp could have been orange, red, or plain stainless.
By "completeness" I simply mean do you have all the accessories it would have came with from the factory; aka the original cardboard box, manual, advertising pamphlets, tool kit etc. With all of these things included, they would increase the value of your gun. Since your late father left you this, it sounds like a keeper to me. These 66's are excellent, very accurate shooters.
'Pinned and recessed' refers to the barrel and the cylinder. Most Smith and Wesson revolvers from the factory featured pinned barrels and recessed cylinders until about 1982 or so when they eliminated these features to cut costs. P & R Smith's are typically more collectible among enthusiasts and collectors.
A pinned barrel has a noticeable/pronounced pin just in front of the cylinder towards the top of the barrel. A recessed or "countersunk" cylinder has the six chambers of the cylinder recessed, allowing the bullet cartridge to sit flush along the top of the cylinder. Neither of these features make much of a difference in the performance department, they were simply the standard back in the day of fine quality and craftsmanship by Smith and Wesson.

Yes sir it is a pinned barrel and recessed cylinder. I do appreciate the information. It is a nice revolver and I will keep it always. I do not have any of the papers or accessories that came with the revolver. I wish I did but I am pretty sure my dad purchased this gun from another individual so he probably never had those items.
It's stamped 66-1. 98K9755 is the serial number, 2.5" is the barrel length, and the cylinder is recessed. Is mine a late -1, since its barrel is not pinned?

That would be my best guess. I had a 66-1 with serial number 97Kxxxx and it WAS pinned and recessed. I would venture to say yours is a "transitional model" as Smith and Wesson was almost into the 66-2 at that time. They also relocated the S & W logo from the right side of the frame to a smaller version on the left side below the cylinder release. I've seen a few model 66's pinned but not recessed and vise versa around the 1981-82 time period.
