Smile Regrets.....Regrets.....Ever Have Any.??

Well..about 6 months ago....I got a wild hair and had to have an Interarms Luger...with a 6" barrel....and the guy I was trading with wanted my S&W Model 36-1 with the 3" heavy barrel.....after some haggling..we finally traded....couple days later....realization hit me....."Wish I hadn't traded that 3" barrel S&W"......Im sure you guys have done much the same thing....traded a pistol off....and shortly thereafter regretted it....well I did....until last nite...when I found the Twin of it for sale by a Dealer out west.....its now paid for..FFL copy sent...hopefully will be here end of week and i will post photos.....this time.....it will NOT be traded off..!!..and as its a twin of the one I had...hope to sneak it by "The Boss" .....now Im looking for a good used brown holster for it........if anyone out there has one that will fit the 36-1 with the 3' barrel...let me know....and I'm looking for a Belt holster by the way.......This is a Super site....altho I keep getting in trouble by being on it......this is the 2nd S&W I've purchased last two months..

Get out a Crying Towel.

Several years ago I decided to have My Idea of the ultimate S&W handgun built. I started with an as new Model 25-2. We then ordered a new Barrel for a S&W 25-5 with Red Ramp front sight. A little Master Gunsmith work and we had a new 25-2 with 4" Red Ramp barrel, a perfect Deluxe Blue finish, and real rifling to shoot lead bullets. A Smith & Wesson that the factory dropped the ball on.

Like an Idiot one day I let a fellow look at it while at the gun shop. He wanted to know what I would take for it. I popped off a number that I thought was way too high. Guess what, he reached in his pocket and pulled out a money clip full of $100 bills and paid me.

That was a painful learning experiance. Never price anything you are not planning to sell.

I have others I wish I had back also. Traded to finance another project. All the S&W's I wish I had back were Blued guns. 24, 25, 29, 49, and a 586.

Bob

At least you didn't trade a good wife or a good truck.
Those are harder to replace.

Here's my story, and I'm sticking to it:

I was assigned to Germany three times over the course of my career; each time I was authorized to bring firearms over. However, in 1999, the agreement between the US and the German governments changed, and all firearms had to be registered in the very restrictive German system. One of the changes I almost failed to track was that the ATF does not allow the importation of military surplus into the US by private citizens. I was fooled because I had brought an M-1 Garand back and forth, but because I had purchased it in the US and could show shipping documents, it was no problem.

My problem and regret. Last year, I forgot all this and bought a M1917. I couldn't believe that I found one here in Germany and had wondered what it's story must be. Last month, it dawned on me that it might be considered surplus, and sure enough; it's kind of hard to get around that big "United States Property" engraved on the barrel, "US Army" on the heel and US proof marks all over it. So I sold it as my return to the US is imminent, otherwise I might have to sell it at a huge loss or even have to give it away, which actually is not easy in Germany; you can't just give a gun to someone, especially a handgun. I miss it already, don't know which part of regret I have , that I found it at all, that I bought it without checking, or that I was forced to sell it. Not real happy with the ATF these days, needless to say.

Farewell, old friend.

Sold a M-18, that had been given to me new in the box. Used the money to buy a used 17-3. I liked the six inch better. Don't regret buying the 17 but wish I had kept the M-18 as well.

Default Oh to have Time travel perfected!

Back in the early 90's I flew back to NJ to visit my parents. On the drive down Rt 22 from Newark Airport we of course stopped at Ray's Sport Shop in N. Plainfield.

In one of the cases there were TWO NIB K-32's in their boxes, along with a case of RP .32 wadcutter target loads. I looked at them through the glass and never gave them a second look...NOT what I was into back then.

In my defense...I DID come home with a circa 1966, blued M-19, 3T's gun, NIB for $325 shipped to my FFL here in MT.

NOW when I'd kill for a K-32 , those two guns still HAUNT me.

Regrets?

I had a blind date with an Ugly Monkey Lookin' Woman one time because my pal wanted to date her great looking friend and she would only go out with him if he got a date for her "friend". I just about passed out when I saw her. She kept asking me why I was sitting so low in the back seat of my pal's car.

I have retrets everytime I read the ads in the old Guns and Ammo Magazines from the 50s and early 60s.

I have a trainload of regrets over the last 38 years of trading guns, but as my father told me about 30 years ago, you may not be able to afford all the guns you want in your life, but you can afford through careful trading practises to own all the guns you want at least once in your life.

On a more sobering note on regrets; I wish I had started gathering my family history earlier---I'm the oldest surviving member of my family and having a two year old great grandaughter, it came to me recently that she would know of my grandparents. So, I began a search to build a history for her and my children and grandchildren, and it soon dawned on me that at some time, while they were all alive, I could have asked each of them to write or record his or her life history in their own words and how easy it would be to have this record available.
However, my biggest regret is twofold , one , that I never thanked them for all they contributed to my life, and two, that I didn't spend more time with them.
I would give everything I own just to spend one more hour with each of them.

We learn from our mistakes. My Colts are gone.

I try to spend as much time with my whole family as much as I can. My new grandson is 4yo now. I try to spend as much time with him as I can. I know my time is short and limited but I enjoy life now everyday. My son's and daughter, grandson, their spouses and my misses mean the world to me.

My regrets are, luckily, only with vintage cars, motorcycles and wives.
No regrets with what's in my safe. Phew!!

I had a beautiful 98% Browning HP and I got in the Sig buying mode and sold it to buy a Sig I wanted. The Sig P220 was a great pistol and I really like it but I realized almost immediately that I really missed my Browning HP. So the search began and it took me four years to find a replacement and I wanted it bad enough to trade a S&W 27-2 6 inch for it. The same exact model HP with millet sights & Spegal grips.

How in the world does a thread that's over two years old get resurrected? Brought back my K-32 regret all over again too.

I buy/sell/trade a lot, and yes, I have many regrets. On the other hand, I've enjoyed many guns over the years that I wouldn't have otherwise been able to enjoy had I not traded and sold. At last count, I've owned over 200 handguns in the last 40 years (not all at one time, by any means.)

I think the ones I most regret, though, are the guns I bought myself as a welcome home treat when I got out of the Navy in 1973. I bought some S&Ws (M19, M27, and a M29) and some Colts (1911 Government model, Detective Special, and a SAA in .45LC.) A couple of years later, I'd had to sell them all to help pay for college expenses. I wish to this day I'd found some other way, and I still had each of those guns. I don't regret all the others that have passed through my hands like those.

Willie say-

"Nothing I Can Do About It Now"

I've got a long list of real good reasons
For all the things I've done
I've got a picture in the back of my mind
Of what I've lost and what I've won
I've survived every situation
Knowing when to freeze and when to run
And regret is just a memory written on my brow
And there's nothing I can do about it now.

Remember if you had it another way, that could've been wrong too.

I purchased a Colt Python 4" the day I turned 21 yrs. of age. It had been tuned by what became the Colt Custom Shop for a Under Sheriff Officer here in LV. It was a tackdriver. About 10 years later I got the bug for a 6" Python. I wasn't gunsmithing at the time, so I had a GS in Denver swap in a 6" bbl. I let him keep the 4" bbl. as it reduced the cost to me considerably. I didn't get a chance to shoot it for about 4 months. The Python now shot patterns, not groups. I went back to the gunshop and to my dismay that GS had been replaced and they claimed to not know where my guy was. I tried every reloading trick in the world to get that 6" to shoot, but to no avail. I kept it until I was back in the pistol smithing business and then I bought a new 4" bbl. and swapped back. The new 4" was much better than the old 6" in accuracy but not near as good as the original. The Python reminded me of my stupidity so much, I sold it. Never mess with something that is perfect to begin with. ....... Big Cholla

Regrets??. Buying or selling??. if selling I can think of at least half a dozen pre'64 model 70's, a FN made 30-06 belgian army rifle, and a bunch of others. Buying, now that's a different story. Got skunked a few times but learned a valuable lesson. When you want it bad step back and take a closer look. Frank

The good part is,I got it for what I sold the first one for. The bad part is,I'm too old to be buyin'. I'm supposed to be sellin' 'em off at my age,not buyin' 'em back!

I regret things that happened more than 2 years ago. I regret things that are happening now. I'm sure that I will regret things I do tomorrow. If you live a life with no regrets, you're either perfect or you don't do anything.

Several regrets, but gun-wise, only a few.
One that comes to mind is about a dozen years ago, I was not all that into S&W's, and had a bad case of 1911-itis.
Sold a almost NIB 3" M66 to a fellow detective for $375 in order to fund some 1911 I was salivating over.
Now, in retirement, I work p/t at a LGS with that same ol' retired lawdog, and he still rubs my nose in the fact that I 'gave' him that M66.

Occasionally. I sold a near mint (~98%) Model 10 - 8 to finance a Mauser C96 that couldn't hit the side of a barn from the inside even after being refurbished. I got the $$$ invested in it back when I sold the thing but I was still out the nicest K-frame I ever owned.

I blame it on olcop.

But really is there anything truly new under the sun. Its all rehashed restarted rhetoric we just saved a few bits and bytes on this one by continuing the story. It was new to me for sure.

Default I regret one that got away...

When I got out of the Army in '71, I saw a used Colt SAA, 4 and whatever inch barrel, blue, in .45 Colt...for about $400. It was used, but very nice...I passed on it because I thought ammo would be hard to come by...I did buy a WWII issue Remington Rand 1911 A1 that same day, along with a box of steel case WWII issue ammo for it...for about $300, so it wasn't a total loss, but I really liked that SAA Colt...

Guess i'm a little different. I have no regrets on guns sold and traded
away for another make or model. I got to own them and shoot them
for awhile and i can't take them with me so....No worries.
All the guns i have on my "want list" are still out there somewhere.
Sure they will be more expensive now than they we're back in 1980
but what has'nt gone up in price in 30 plus years ?
I figure if i want a model bad enough i'll pony up when i find it and
own it for awhile God willing.
There are guns in my safe that are ear marked for the grandkids
upon my departure from this earth. Hopefully the ones i have left
when i kick the bucket will be appreciated by someone, if not my
kin then somebody elses. Maybe they will say a silent "thank you"
to the guy who took good care of them. Thats all i can ask for.....

Thanks to you guys, no regrets. I've looked for excellent examples of classic Smiths, bought a few of the ones I could afford, and have enjoyed every one.

Regrets? Not really. I enjoyed what I owned, enjoy what I own now. That's about it.

i was stupid enough to price a 90% original (unaltered sight/safety) low 3 digit serial number, model 1900 colt a few years back at the big Louisville KY show, the money was spent and i will never again be able to replace that early bottom feeder
