How desireable is the Model .41 Magnum Target, nickle finish, six inch barrel. My gunsmith has an excellent one for sale at $800, no box or tools. What are your thoughts?

Never saw a 'Magnum Target'!

A Model 57 is a Model 57. Don't think I ever saw one without the three T's.

Sounds about right on the price.Offer him 700 and see what happens.

I think it is a bit strong for a box-less revolver. Assuming it is pinned and recessed and in superb condition, I'd think about $700 would be top dollar.

If I really liked the gun, I'd be willing to pay $800 for it. If you can get it for 10-15% less, so much the better. I think it boils down to whether you like nickel guns and six-inch barrels more than blue guns with barrels that are longer or shorter.

The ".41 Magnum Target" label is from the Standard Catalog. When a frame and caliber are available in both a fixed sight and adjustable sight version, the authors call the adjustable sight model (M57 and M24 for example) the "target" model and the fixed sight gun (M58 or M21) "military" or "M&P."

If it is mint, I would buy it. It's not an unreasonable price.

I have a 4 inch and an 8 3/8, love both of them. A 6 inch would round out the group, I'd get it. Price seems fair, locally (Miami) thats what they're going for - just picked up a 27-2 ($780) and a 29-2 ($800), both 8 3/8 nickel with boxes and tools. (The 29-2 was unfired, mint)

It has a pinned barrel and the cylinder is recessed. Large stocks without the diamond. White outline on the rear sight.

I would pass... Go over to GunBroker and type in 57 Nickel. There is one described as 99% but no box for $700.00. P&R, TT, TH and TS...doesn't even look fired.

Then hit Advanced Search and look at Completed Items. There is a LN 6" nickel no box that sold for $655.00

$800 is way too much without it being excellent with the box...

In my area, prices on the 6" .41 mag have recently jumped. I think that more are reloading and more are shooting hogs, really. The 4" was the preferred barrel length for quite a while and $800 for a 4" is not out of line. But now, seems the 6" is preferred, especially in nickel. Bottom line, offer less, but if it is in the conditon you describe, get it.

Best barrel length for hunting iMO. I'm up to 45 deer with my no dash 57. People are seeing what a .41 mag can do, which is everything a .44 can do with a little less recoil. Lots of great bullets out there for handloading and the round shoots flat, is inherently accurate and hits hard. I'm down to one .44 mag and don't even shoot it anymore as it's a special 3" 629. Had 3 and and my .41 did everything they did so I didn't need to reload another caliber.

That price is not bad at all IMO. Timings everything and if it's what you want go for it. Don't let 50.00 - 100.00 change your mind. especially if you buy on line and pay for the shipping fee's. If I had just one caliber for doing everything it would be a .41 mag. Have thousands of rounds loaded up and all the fixings to reload a couple thousand more. Will take anything from a brown bear (with a cool headed back up) to a rabbit. Head shots with my 6" are easy on them at 30 yards and less.

Warning:

They are addicting. Still pack my old 6" and still get a deer bout every year with it. It will hit a gallon jug of water at 100 yards on a regular basis, shooting from a rest with no coffee in me. Now keep my shots to 50 yards max. (love my range finder). If I scoped it a 100 yd. shot would be a piece of cake, but I still have some good vision left.

Here is my tribe to wet your appetite. I packed the 3' 657 alot for hiking and camping. That was before the prices went through the roof on them. It's also a very accurate revolver and people really look at ya when ya light one off at the range. The 58 is a house weapon and a darn good one at that.




57 nickel no dash with presentations. Don't shoot this one much as it's a 99% revolver.

I will ageree with BOB, $800 is high on the model 57.

I live in South Foirda and they hardly sell here at all. They do not command the prices of other N-frames.

About 5 or 6 weeks ago I picked up a model 57 that was sitting in my LGS case for a few months. Admittedly it is 8 3/8" which is why I let it sit. I already had both a 57 and 657 in that barrel length.


The one in the used case barely had a turn line. It was missing the box and papers but I walked out with it for an offer of $450. It is cleaner than the one I already owned and it is P&R.

Back in January I picked up a 2 5/8" Performance Center 657 (pre lock) for $700. This give me a NY reload if I decide to carry the 657 UDR. At that price I did not even haggle, I just paid for it. Almost forgot to mention the best part......the serial umber is my birthday. It was a sign.

Last August I bought a 4" model 57 from a local individual for $500. Not super clean but 4" 57s are a little harder to find.

There are lots of deals out there if you look and are willing to negotiate a little. It is mostly a matter of patience

Quite agree. The 41 magnum is a caliber that appeals to those who handload for it or are willing to do so. Like the 44 Special, it is a connoiseur's caliber and sellers can wait a while for a motivated buyer to come along. It is only because of recent collector interest that they have gone up in price on the older examples.

Great find...if one happens to come this way I would grab it...but knowing there are pre-ILs out there I could never buy one of the "new" ones...

Sometimes, paying a little more for a gun you find locally, which you can look at in person first, pay the price and then walk out with, is a better deal than a gun bought sight-unseen, from an unknown party, for a little bit less, and then paying for shipping, insurance and a transfer fee on your end. Being able to examine it first is usually worth a bit extra to me. It removes a great deal of risk from the equation.

It's also a lot easier to bargain face-to-face, as well.
