As others have noted, those grips are very unusual.
I like 'em.

+1 on the grips! Were the grips included or something you added? If you added them, where did they come from?

I added the grips and had purchased them off of Ebay and they fit perfectly-even up close to the trigger guard.

bigun, everybody beat me to it on the grips! BUT, the gun is cool too! I got a 6 inch 28 no dash last month. (1960) Super clean. Haven't found the perfect grips for it yet. It is now wearing diamond targets.
I have picked up nice grips from ebay also. I am currently refinishing a set for my 28. Got a set of thumb rest grips for it too, but they are too big for me. Enjoy yours, I do mine! Bob

1)Hey, congratulations on finding that nice 6 inch model 28 no dash!

2)I recently found a first year(Early 1954)4" pre model 28 that is as nice as my 4" 28-2 above-except, that it needs the Diamond magnas or else, the diamond targets-which I'd prefer.

3)Yes, I'm going to enjoy owning my 28-2-thanks!

I have to respectfully disagree. A black on black Highway Patrolman just has to be the official sidearm on the Dark Side.

Bigun, I am now on a mission to find similar stocks. Did the eBay seller have anymore?

Great looking model 28 and the grips are cool. Sadly I had a 28-2 4 inch and sold. Still miss it. Enjoy it and don't sell it.

Yes, I will post some pictures up close of the Ebony Wood Target grips whenever I'll get a chance to do this! Okay, I'm back with some close up's of the grips-but, no matter how hard I tried, my camera kept picking up glare from the lighting! Just keep in mind that these grips are piano black in color. Also, there is a little lint from my micro fiber cloth stuck in the sharp checkering that I could not get lose(Yet)! Here are the latest photos:

Yep, I definitely need to find some stocks like that!

As much as I like 1911s I agree that this would be Vader's sidearm.

No, the gun has not been refinished! That's just the way it had turned out directly from S&W originally!

By golly, you just remined me that have a black holster and belt that I had purchased from a police officer that was his duty holster/belt, several years ago. So, I'll need to locate this to see if it will fit this 28-2? Thanks for the compliment!

You have a truly nice 4" 28-2 there! I have a 6" 28-2 that had also shipped in 1973 in the same great condition as yours! Thanks for the compliment on the Ebony Wood stocks!
