My favorite caliber!! A P&R Mod 57 4" is becoming a very difficult gun to find in my area. I never see them in that price range. You're going to love it!

Now you need to Locate one in Vanilla ! The Nickel model 57's in a 4" configuration are not often seen. I came across mine about Eight years ago. It came to me in it's original factory presentation case with the Diamond Coke profile stocks on it as shown. Many shun the .41 Magnum caliber as it was factory loaded much Tamer than that of the .44 Magnum. The reason for this was that it was designed as a Police round so they had to down load it, which in Essence Killed the Popularity of the round. I hand load for mine and can tell you that the .41 Magnum will do everything the .44 Magnum can do, with Less bullet drop due to it's bullet being .019" smaller in diameter than that of the .44 Magnum bullet...Here is my 4" Nickel Model 57...Hammerdown

Most likely a good old gun. Give that one a thorough cleaning and see what it does. Since I have never seen a non-abused 57 that wouldn't "shoot the lights out" (particularly with Remington 210-gr JSP ammo), you might find that critter deserves a cylinder reblue. Otherwise, it looks pretty good!

Nice gun...once you shoot it a bit think of sending it back to S&W for a cosmetic overhaul... I have seen some of their recent facelifts and they seem to be doing a real nice job....

What would Skeeter do?

Congrats on your first .41 mag! As Hammerdown said it will do everything a .44 mag will do with the right load. Have many a deer to prove it. I like loading up 210 gr. Speer Gold Dots for deer hunting these days and a 210 gr. LSWC over 7.0 grains of Unique makes for a great practice round.

More and more people are seeing the great things the .41 mag can do and I believe it's getting more popular. The 4" is the handiest but my 6" is my most accurate .41 and the one I use for deer hunting. I'd suggest buying a 3" version and a model 58 (fixed sight version) as their prices have been going up and will make for a good investment. The 3" is a very easy revolver to pack and has alot of punch if needed.

Thinking about getting it "re-done" - color cased frame and re-blued barrel and cylinder. Maybe some stag or ivory grips? Would re-finishing affect the value too much? Have a guy locally that does AMAZING work at fair prices!

Two schools of "value" IMO...

One is the collector point of view that wants it pristine, original and not messed with. If potential investment is your intent that's the way to go... You can shoot them, keep them exceptionally nice, and get an excellent return on your fun hobby if you decide to trade or sell it later.

Two is the owner/shooter point of view. Modify it the way you wish, shoot it the way you want. It's a tool and who cares about value when heavy use is so much fun....

I do both... I can think of nothing prettier than a color cased N frame with a bright blue barrel and cylinder. My problem is I need and want to keep an original gun of the type being modified in my collection. Duplicating guns for that purpose gets a tad expensive.

It's you gun, your creation and your money... Do whatever puts the biggest smile on your face!

Nice 41Mag. I would have no reservations about refinishing that one, it looks well used already. It's your gun to do as you like and if a refinish will make you happy go for it.

I had a 57 marked S A P D, San Antonino P D, one of the few depts. to issue the .41 to their officers. Sold it to a friend when
I moved to Ak. to elimate a calibre, only .41 I had. Later another friend had a real nice 57, ya, I traded into it! Now that 57 is here in Az. where I live now, so I guess I better get started on requiring it. My friend used it to shoot Halibut in Alaska, don't think he needs it here so maybe I have a chance to get it back.

While there can be good reasons for re-doing the finish on a gun, you gotta remember that the result of it is usually two things.

1. You don't want to shoot it anymore because you don't want to mess up or dirty the beautiful new finish.
2. It gets locked in the safe for too long, and then gets sold (probably at a net loss) because you figure you "never shoot it."

Now, is that what you really want?

I say save the money on the re-finish, and spend that money on a nice holster and some AMMO.

You got a good deal. I have a 4" M57 that has a blemish or two that I paid about $250 for about a dozen years ago. Sucker shoots like a laser, and I've even carried it a few times in my Lobo IWB holster.
That one sure looks used. I think you should just use it some more.

Congratulations, that's a great price ! And I'm not a safe queen guy, so I would have jumped on that myself. I have two M57's , a 4" and 6", both S prefixes, and they are both great to shoot.
And even if you don't handload, I've had great results with reloaded ammo from several suppliers.
