Default Get a Grip. Let's see yours.

What woods and styles do you like for your aftermarket grips? Interested in your reasons for your preference; good looking, density, toughness, checkered vs smooth, finger groves vs non. Give us the maker as well.

Variety is the spice of life! Here are a few sets that don't currently have a permanent home, and a few other pictures of some that I have mounted. Thumbrests and palm swells are a personal favorite, as well as backstraps that are closed at the top. I can do with or without finger grooves. Checkering is preferred, but not required (especially on bigger calibers). Of course none of these are currently available (Other than the Kurac and Keith Brown-Ropers), but I'm always looking for used ones! Did I mention that I like grips?

Like 410bore I am a fan of the original stocks, unless it originally came with "Goodyears" and then they have to be changed. I also bought an aftermarket set for my snubbie 16-1because I carry it and didn't want to mess up the original stocks.

I really like the Ahrends grips. They look and fit awesome and they are VERY reasonably priced (approx $60).

Here are two from my collection with Ahrends...

66-1

625-6

I think there are some great after market grips out there.
I'm a pretty traditional guy and the S&W stocks are fine with me.
I'm quickly becoming a fan of smooth targets

I am grip thirsty and would like a coke

I normally take off original stocks and store them. I do not want anything to happen to the original stocks. That being said, I just love the way beautiful stocks dress up a Smith. I must admit to have more than my share of dress up stocks. Here a a few from Kurac, Patrick Grashorn, Ahrends, and Altamont. I would love to have some Keith Browns, Sanderson, Roper, Farrant and others. I am sure I left out someone, but it was not intentional. I really like beautiful stocks.

Kurac Royal Walnut

Kurac Curly Maple

Kurac Claro Walnut

Kurac Cocobolo

Patrick Grashorn's Magnas

Bonded Ivory from Altamont

Boot Stocks from Altamont

I do not know who made these. Found them at a gun show.

Ahrends, tung oil

For the money, you can't beat Kurac stocks. They are crafted from beautiful wood and they fit both the gun and your hand precisely.
Here is a 629-1 with a set of Kurac coke-style smooth target stocks in teak.

Perfect feeling older Ajax sambar stags on a short 27-2 and Kuracs on the 29-2 I picked up day before yesterday. It came with service stocks.

For aftermarket that are distinctive and period correct (1960-early70s) I like Farrants, newer modern looking: Kurac

On my Model 29-5, my deer hunting revolver, I use Hogue's "Camolamo." They look great (yet don't stand out in the natural woods) + the finger groove grip makes it easy and sure to handle with gloves on.

Several of my favorite "working" revolvers wear Patrick Grashorn magna-style elk "stags." Sturdy, beautiful . . . and keep the original S&W stocks storage. Now all of these Grashorn's also are used with Tyler T-grips . . .

Then again . . . I love S&W magna stocks a lot too . . .

These laminated grips from Altamont can be easily reshaped and repolished similiar to the modified or PC grips or however you like them.

I don't know who makes these packawood grips but they work very well with this 627-0. I like the smooth round feel of these grips, however, I didn't like the fact that they were completely flat on the bottom and had sharp edges around the bottom. A few minutes with my Dremmel (sanding then polishing) and the bottom of the grips are now rounded to my satisfaction.

After 44 years of shooting I have developed some strong opinions on what I like in handgun stocks.

1. I need checkering on heavy recoiling guns. A 44 Magnum with smooth stocks would leave my hand upon firing.

2. No finger grooves. My fingers never fit well and they feel awful. No thumb rests, either.

3. I don't like stocks that extend far below the frame. Increases felt recoil due to recoil axis being altered and they just look too big to me.

4. No target style stocks with barrels less than 4" in length. Simply look too big for the gun.

5. Not a big fan of stag. I have one set that is polished smooth and they are all right.

6. I like mother of pearl but this material is fragile.

7. I love ivory.

With that said, here are my S&Ws with custom stocks. Not that many. Two with ivory and one with polished stag. The vast majority of my S&Ws wear factory wood.

The only really custom grips I have are the target grips built to my hand by Ernie Vitarbo.

These are on my High Standard bullseye gun, the grips were made back in the 90's.

These are on my current IZH35M bullseye gun, made by Ernie about 3 years ago.

I know everyone is probably tired of seeing them, but I love these
Culina, English Walnut, Coke profile, N frame, Exhibition Grade,
square butt grips. I prefer checkering and from what I remember
the English Walnut is a good choice for checkering because of the
density. I wanted a bit more palm swell and wanted these without
fingergrooves. I thought about getting speedloader cutouts on
both grip panels but changed my mind at the last minute.

Before checkering...

After checkering...

They are Moradillo. I bought them from a member, removed the poly finish and applied 12 coats of tung oil.

These are recent production Badger Grips in Goncalo Alves. David gave them to me unfinished. Nothing but a couple coats of Tung oil. (Model 66)

More Badgers in Goncalo Alves...bought this set finished for a 3" Model 60.

Okay, okay, I know it's not a Smith...but these Badger Goncalo Alves with Tung oil set looks good on a Detective Special:

Badgers in birdseye maple on a Model 37 with a Bobby Mac holter.

Picked up a pair of Hogue stocks at a local gun show. Really like them.

Got this last week. Hogue Monogrip in Rosewood. #19913. As hard as I try to like finger groove stocks, they don't work well for me. These feel great. Next trip to the range will tell me more. Bob

My 66-2, with home altered checkered Herrett S.B. target stocks. 66 is round butt! Out to the garage & tools. Cutting & sanding. Spray lacquer finish. I am happy with the results. Bob

I had myself added to the Culina's list for a set of these. It'll take a few months, but it looks to be worth it, as is with all their grips. Thanks for helping me spend my money, Gunar
