Extremely Rare Smith & Wesson Mercox Dart Projectile Gun with Box
Manufactured by Smith & Wesson for Mercox circa 1967. According to Supica and Nahas in the STANDARD CATALOG OF SMITH & WESSON, this is one of 25 dart projectile guns manufactured by Smith & Wesson with 17 to 18 reportedly shipped. With very few made, the authors concluded that it is possible that this gun was experimental only. This handgun type device is based on a K-22 frame and was designed to deliver hypodermic dart syringes or other types of materials such as teargas, dye, or explosive or crowd control projectiles. It has a standard Model 17 K-22 square butt frame, walnut grips featuring S&W medallions, hammer and trigger. A 12 1/2 inch barrel with an adapter is attached to the frame and uses a special .22 caliber cartridge as a propellant. The right side of the frame is stamped with the S&W logo and the S&W Springfield address. The checkered hammer and serrated trigger have a casehardened finish with the remaining metal surfaces blue. The nicely figured extended grips are checkered and feature S&W medallions. Included is the S&W blue box and 11 promotional type pamphlets.

Wonder if it belongs to this fella? Never did hear any follow-up from him.

acco40,
That looks like the 'finished product' after development. It is in great shape, looks new, and has some obvious refinements over what I believe were early engineering designs pictured below.
Totally interesting concept.
Enjoy,

I have the same question, do they vent gases up to propel the dart?

Mercox
I have been lucky enough to obtain two of the S&W Mercoxs in great condition in boxes within the last two weeks. Interesting guns. Now to find a dart or two for the display. Also got 3 of the Smiths tear gas guns at the same time. And a pair of 29-1's in the 6 and 8. This is my first year of Smith collecting and am really enjoying it - and retirement Thanks to all for the forum information
Best to all...

Only seen one. A zoo vet up in Balto, and DC brought one in for a clean.
It was beat as far as finish went, Neat S&W.

bdGreen - this is off-topic - but Thank-you for the Cornell Pubs link! My mother through away (burned it - we lived on a farm) my 1966 S&W catalog sometime in the 70's. I've never been able to find one since ... until today. Granted, it's a reprint but it sounds like they've done a good job with it. Back on topic - this is a great thread - I never knew S&W made a dart gun ...

Neat, thanks for sharing. I can remember Pontiac Correctional Center having gas guns set up
on S&W N frames to throw tear gas canisters.

Didn't acquire this one. Looked it over and fondled it. I was just never going to find a spot for it in my collection. This one obviously didn't start out life as a K22.
enjoy,
