Questions and more questions about a 27-2 from a nube
Let me begin by saying I'm not a Smith & Wesson enthusiast, but have recently purchased a 27-2 from a co-worker who inherited it from his recently passed uncle. I want to buy a Bushmaster and thought I got a good deal on this revolver with the intention of either trading it or selling it outright to get the $ to buy a bushmaster.
I know very little about S&W revolvers...but am amazed at the knowledge some of the guys on this forum have...understandly so as avid collectors. Most of the research I have done on this revolver has come from reading other posts.
So just to give you some background... The revolver has a serial number S31110xx (I think) which would make it mfgrd in 1968ish. I took it to a pawn shop (just to get its value) and the guy wasn't very helpful with that...He told me I should hold on to it...He further said he would rate it at 99% and didn't think it had ever been fired. He told me he didn't think it had even been loaded. (but I'm sure it had been loaded 'cause the guy I bought it from gave me 6 bullets in a ziploc that he said came out of it. It is blued not nickel or stainless.
My questions are...What is the best way to sell it? Should I post it on a forum such as this or one like gunsamerica or another auction type website? If I do sell it is it illegal to just mail it? How do I receive the funds? Does the fact that I have a carry permit even matter? How can I find out its value so that I don't undersale?
Thanks in advance for the answers to the above Q's. I can post pics later if that would help answer any of the questions. Let me know what if any additional info you need to address my questions.
Thx, Jeff

Welcome to the Forum!
The real experts will be along shortly. But, in the meantime, I didn't see a barrel length, if it's blue or nickel finish, what kind of grips are on it (and do they number to the gun?), does it have a wooden display case, condition of box or case if present, original tools and paperwork, etc. All of these things are going to bear on the value.
In short:
But, here's one to tide us over for the moment (NOT THE OP'S GUN) :
Look something like this?

Welcome to the Forum. Your 27-2 was probably a 1968 or '69 shipped gun. The "4-screw" frame went from 1957 to '61, and had 3 on the sideplate and one on the front base of the trigger guard, which is the one that was deleted, so this is a 3-screw frame.
As far as selling it, at present the shorter barrels (3.5 and 5") are bringing the higher prices. The buyer should send some type of certified funds, a USPS money order being the safest for you. It is a modern gun, so if you are selling it here or on a website it has to be sent to an FFL. You can personally use FedEx Priority Overnight or UPS Next Day Air in most states, but this is expensive. A dealer can send it at your end by USPS, which is usually less expensive even with the fee they will charge.
If you look at completed sales (not just listings) on Gunbroker, you should have a good idea of current pricing.
Lastly, if you have any interest at all in S & W products, as the pawn shop guy said - you may eventually regret selling it. I have nothing against black plastic/stamped steel guns (have had a few myself), but they are not a new 42 year old model 27. Hope this is helpful.

Murphydog is correct. It must be shipped through an FFL dealer to
an FFL location. I would list it on here and include all pertinent
info: You mentioned it was blued and 99% that's good. Now add
what lenghth barrel, type of grips with the gun, does it have box
and papers? Include good pictures in the ad. Ask that funds be
payed however you choose: Paypal, Postal money order, check.etc...
Model 27-2's are a desirable gun but as previously stated, the 3 1/2"
and 5" bbls are bringing the most money right now. Check to see
what guns like yours are "Selling" for on Gunbroker. Notice i said
selling for. Alot of stuff on there is people who want waaaay too much
and it does'nt sell at their prices. Hope this helps. People on here
would give it a good home and appreciate it more than most.

I'd recommend posting it here in the for sale section, as a trade for the gun you want. You should post pictures, both right and left side, along with any additional items such as box, papers, cleaning kit, etc. I would recommend shipping through a licensed firearms dealer. Shipping costs can be negotiable. And be sure to keep it oiled and in a safe, dry area! You want it to stay in as good a shape as possible to command top dollar/best trade.

The S/N has 1 too many digits. If it is S31110x then 1968 is the correct year. Pics would be very helpful. You can sell the gun on this forum with good confidence that you will get a fair price. But us folks need more info as 2hawk said. It should be a 27-2 if that is correct S/N. Barrel length is measured from muzzle to the cylinder face. 3 1/2, 4, 5 ,6 and 8 3/8" barrels where available in 1968. the 6.5" was discontinued in 1967 but I wouldn't count on your not having that length either.
It is probably not a 3 1/2" because someone in Central Florida bought them all.. or at least all that are known to be in circulation. I hope this helps. Pics are your friend...

Excellent advise so far, and I did miss that it is blued. Jeffrod, you may need to register on Gunbroker in order to see completed sales, but that is a good benchmark for pricing. In addition, there is a primer on buying and selling guns that goes over some of the legal requirements on that site. You should also know what your state laws are if you are interested in buying or selling. If you have a CHL I assume that you must have already gotten a transaction or two under your belt, so you would know a little about the regular paperwork that an FFL has to do. Interstate transactions will require you ship to an FFL, and it may be in your interest to have an FFL on your end to handle shipping for you. Normally you would have funds in hand before you ship to the buyer's FFL, who will log the gun in and then transfer to the buyer. All pretty standard stuff.
As suggested, take some good photos, figure out the value, and post it up here on the Forum classifieds, and I am sure you will have some interest.

@ Mbliss...you are correct sir...it seems I left off the last digit...not the last two digits(Why do people put X's in the end of a serial no. anyways? But it is a 3 1/2 barrel...so the guy in Fl missed one:-)
@ 2hawk...It is a 3 1/2 barrel as measured from tip of barrel to front of cylinder. It did not come with a box, papers, etc...just the gun. I'm assuming the grips are the ones it was bought with...(see pics) also, fyi it is a .357 mag.
@ murphydog - Man! That last paragraph is so true...I kinda feel like I'm looking to sell a mint 57 chevy so i can by a new model Vette...They both are sweet cars...but where ya gonna find another mint 57 chevy right. But with that being said...I'm really not a collector, I do have a Glock 23 for self defense, basic deer rifles, turkey shotguns etc. But just haven't ever had the desire or funds to collect guns.
btw pics attached (I hope)

Jeffrod, that's a very nice gun. If you have your PM's turned on I think you're going to have a few waiting

That's a beautiful gun. I think that you would soon regret selling it.

That's the one everybody wants. You might put it up for auction on Gunbroker.com. I would start it at $700.

Nice one. That's the most sought-after barrel length by far right now, and I CCW mine regularly. Enjoy it. You will regret selling, I assure you.

I am working hard to refrain from more buying right now, and if I were to slip, the 3.5" which I have already noted to be very attractive is the least practical FOR ME. I agree $700 is a good starting point. If you don't have a .38/.357, this is a pretty good one and I encourage you to consider keeping it.
Side issue: If you are considering an AR platform, do some more research on forums dedicated to serious use of the AR platform. (10-8forums.com and lightfighter would be my suggestions - NOT arfcom.) I think you will find that other makes will get suggested. I have been very happy with my BCM EAG package, one of which was for sale on this forum. There are a lot of very serious people who will advocate that make and model.

There will likely be 10,000 more black rifles produced in the next few years. There won't be anymore 27's like that one ever made again.
Just sayin'..

What Iggy said...If I had any kind of AR, I would trade it to you in a heartbeat for that, and I have just recently purchased two 3 1/2" .357's.

Jeffrod, you've found one of the ones everyone is lusting after. If you look on the inside of the right stock panel, you'll probably see the serial number stamped on it, which indicates they were fitted to this gun from the factory.
Many people don't post the full SN because they do not want the gun identified specifically; for determining the ship date for one of these, the full SN is not needed in any case.
Good luck with your decision to sell it; you've found the wrong place for encouragement to do that...

What Iggy said. Even if you aren't into revolvers, please consider keeping this one as an investment. Or be certain to sell to someone that would appreciate it.

Sir, you have one of the finest revolvers ever produced, and it's not likely that revolvers of this style and quality will be produced anytime soon. As others have suggested think long hand hard before selling it.

Jeffrod, you don't have a mint '57 Chevy there. You have a mint '57 Lincoln Mark II - the finest engineering available in its day.
I completely understand your wish to use it in order to obtain funds for a gun you prefer. But I must agree with so many others here. AR platforms, while not "a dime a dozen" in price, are ubiquitous in the day and age. They're everywhere, in endless combination of caliber and accessory. That Model 27-2, in the condition seen in your photos, is a rare thing.

Welp guys, After all the information, comments, and advice I've received re: this little revolver, I have decided to just keep it! The overwhelming majority on here has advised me to do that and I guess I will. It'll be a nice heirloom for my son one day. I've put a fresh coat of gunoil on it, wrapped it in an oil cloth and put it back in its case.
Thank you guys very much for your advice...consider it heeded.
Thanks Again,
Jeff

Since it appears to have been lightly used, even with all of our rantings and ravings about your nice model 27 there is no reason you couldn't take it out and put a few rounds through it. Some light .38 target loads perhaps. Enjoy!
