Default Model 63...please help with value

Hi all,

I have a good friend who would like to get rid of his Model 63, 4" barrel. It was his brother's gun that passed a while back. The gun has not been out of storage for 20 years.

I would like to either purchase it from him or help him sell it. I don't really have an interest in it. It has some rust spots. The trigger seems good. The barrel looks fine. He has not shot it and neither have I.

What do you think is a reasonable "buy it now" price for this gun?

By the what, is this known as a good model? I'm familiar with the K22 but not this one. I'd appreciate your thoughts. Thanks,
Dave

The beauty of stainless steel is that it cleans up real easy (well, it will take some rubbing) in maybe 3 or 4 hours. If you are unsure -- go easy (the roughest abrasive I use is 600 grit wet/dry and only on the rust itself -- mostly polishing clothes and fine polish). Once cleaned up, it should go for between $525 and $600 (some are going for more).

A good model-I have it's twin.
As it sits,I'd say 375-400.
Some TLC by experienced hands would enhance that value by 100-150..
As previously mentioned, some very fine wetted emery paper, followed by a Flitz-like product or Scotch-Brite pad to integrate the work and blend it together.
If you don't feel competent, better to leave it alone, that end up with a bright or splotchy finish.

Thank you for the help. I would screw it up if I tried to clean it.

Are these guns known to be good, accurate shooters like the K22?

I like a light, target type trigger...a little lighter than what it currently has. Would a quality trigger job screw up the value...or am I out in left field even considering a trigger job on this model?

Thank you,
Dave

A good gun, more of a handy plinker than target quality gun like the K22.The trigger will never be as good as the larger gun-that's the nature of the coil spring that it uses-the larger gun uses a leaf spring. It is what it is.

Three things going for this gun; it has the box, w/grips and it's a Model 63. This gun is rough. I'll give $385. shipped(send me a PM) or to be politically correct, "Its worth $400".

As a J frame the trigger mechanism is not like the K frame and will not "generally" be as good. With that said I improved mine by changing springs, but did get some light strikes and stuck with the standard spring on one of them and lighter on the other. Don't recall at the moment, but I really like it now and has been very reliable.

If you go slow and easy on the stainless with a gray 3M "scotchbrite" in the direction of the "grain" you would be suprised with the results. Go easy and fear not.

Here are a couple of pictures of the innards and you will see the difference to the J frame vs a K and how the J relies on a spring not the bar, which I think lends to the overall smoothness for the K's.

And I went ahead and cleaned it all up inside, which had never been done. (follow proper takedown, especially on the sideplate if you attempt)

And if you are wanting to get rid of the tools, I would be interested.

Oh and forgot, they are really accurate for a 4" especially after the trigger upgrade. Really fun to shoot.

Also if it has rust on the outside, might be a good idea to look within. That may be making it worse and doubt there is any oil/lube left in the right spots.

Mothers Mag might clean it up with a lot of elbow grease and also using a fine abrasive if you find it necessary. Kit guns are fun and easy to carry. I have a 63 4" and a 34-1 2". They are becoming more expensive to buy so $350-400 would be great. Cleaned up will bring $500+. Don't let it get away, buy it yourself.

I appreciate all the info. Not a K22 but still a nice gun.

I told my buddie it was probably worth about $350 in the current current condition and could be worth over $500 when cleaned up. I told him I would take it for $350 if he was willing. He said "You can have it for less...make an offer." I asked about $300...and he said "sure".

Done deal, baby!

Looks like I got me a plinker.

Thanks again,
Dave
