Question concerning the marking inside N frame Stocks
SORRY, I JUST REALIZED THIS IS POSTED UNDER THE WRONG HEADING. Please move it to the correct era, thanks. In had the stocks off this morning of a 29-2 that shipped in 1971 according to Mr. Jinks with an S prefix serial number. Inside each stock there is stamped (with ink) 5912 on the Right & and 5913 on the Left, NT-430 is ink stamped on both stocks.
Anyone able to explain the significance of these numbers? I suppose they may be assembly numbers with the part number being NT-430 but I wanted to ask the people who are more familiar, thanks for any guidance you may offer.

VM is correct. NT-430 stands for N-frame, Target, bore of .430 inch. The Model 27 is NT-357 and the 41 Magnum is NT-410. The Model 58 (with fixed sights) is N-410. Stocks, regardless of what model they were used on were usually on stamped NT-430 and may be found on the 41 and 44 Magnums. These numbers are used by the factory during the manufacturing process.

When did S&W start or end using this format? It wasn't used on my 1972 N framed 28-2 357 Mag.

Bob...I am not sure what your question is, but these designations were used by the factory internally and only appeared on a few pieces of literature. Target stocks on a 28-2 should be made of walnut (usually) and may be marked NT-38. The factory designation for the Model 28 is NTM-38 (N-frame, Target, Magnum-38 bore (actually 357) to differentiate it from the Model 23 that is the NT-38).

Thanks Bill.
My factory grips for the 28-2 6 inch didn't have that which, is what prompted my question. They also are pretty light colored wood for walnut.
My HP was purchased new in Dec 1972. The 6 inch HP, N1110xx only has the letter N stamped into the wood on each grip. The N seems to be randomly placed. The Serial Number without the N -- 1110xx is way below the N on the Right grip only. There are no other marks and no ink was used in any of the letters or numbers.
So, that is what peaked my curiosity. I can post pix if you'd like.
Thanks.

Bob,
I think what you have may be magnas style grips, serial numbers stamped in those was common, ink stamped NT etc etc was not. I've only ever seen ink stamped NTxxx stampings in the target grips.
Doc or VM will be back in a little while and clear it up for you.

Bob...Most Highway Patrolman (Model 28) revolvers were shipped with Magna type stocks that had the serial number stamped into the right stock panel. The photo below shows a Model 28-2 with this style of stocks.
Target type stocks did not have the serial number stamped into the right stock panel (see second photo).
