Online purchase made today-Thoughts on presentation box? UPDATE w/Pics!
As it turns out, I just made a purchase on Gunbroker for what was listed as a "SmithandWesson 686", but it was a 6" 27-2 Nickel in great shape, box, tools, paperwork, etc. The spelling on the listing did not make it easy to search for, but I found it and was the only bidder! Lets just say I think I did pretty well. The owner was very easy to work with and it is already en-route. I already have a few really nice pinned and recessed older Smiths, but this should make a nice shooter. I am thinking of selling off the box, tools, etc., as I already have a near perfect example of this model (with all that stuff) that I could not bring myself to shoot. What are your thoughts on splitting up the package?
Here is a picture of the two I already have...

Post photos when you get it. I don't like splitting original packages, unless there's a very good reason.

No, that's it, my opinion.

That's a beauty. I'd be interested in the tools and paperwork for a project I'm working on.
Thanks

I wouldn't split it up. Just because you are planning on shooting it doesn't mean you need to break up the set. I have a few pistols that came with boxes that I shoot.
If it was me and I needed to recoup some cash from a purchase, I would find some other way that didn't involve breaking up such a nice package.
Just my humble opinion.

I never really thought I would be more into the collect-ability aspect of having the whole package, but that first 27 got to me. Then I came across a 3.5" blue 27-2 package, and really want an inexpensive "shooter". I figure sell off some of it and be in one for what I hear you guys buying them for all the time. In Idaho we have a shortage of people wanting to part with older Smiths! Every time I read a post here that goes something like, " So, I am down at the local pawn shop, and low and behold, a mint 27 for $350!" It drives me nuts!

Here are some pics the seller just sent! Is this the original plastic bag for the paperwork? Anyone have a ship date, Serial number is N447XXX?

Per SW standard catalog 3, N400000=1977-1978
Congrats on the score.

Thanks guys! I have never sent lead downrange out of a 27, and I am looking forward to trying out some of my hand loads out of this one. (14 grains of 2400 behind a 158 gold dot)

Don't split the package, you will never be able to put it together again. If you really don't want the box, sell the lot and buy an un-boxed gun and pocket the rest.

Keep it all! One day, you'll be glad you did.
I was young once and purchased a hand full of Smith and Wesson revolvers. Back then we would discard the factory grips and never even thought of keeping the cardboard box. Sometimes the gun store would have already discarded the box before you purchased the pistol.
I still have the revolvers and only wish I had kept the boxes, grips, and tools. Live and learn.

While I would probably keep it together as well,I don't feel as strongly about it as the others.
I keep my guns in Boyt cases,so the case, etc would just be clutter to me,and I have limited space for that kind of stuff.Clutter, that if sold, would reduce my investment in the gun by a nice amount, add to my smile when I shoot it.
I used to be into the notion of cased guns and spare grips, etc.etc, but I'm happier with just the pure gun thing, with my favorite grips installed-most of the extras can go.

That's originally what I was looking for, but I did not think 686s came with presentation boxes. It is definitely a 27...

If you NEED to recoup money sell the stuff.
If you are thinking or worried about maximum resale value, keep it.
IF you figure it will never GET sold while your still here....
sell the stuff!

You said the gun is en route... that means you do not have it yet... again, what if a 686 arrives? Wouldn't be the first time a seller used the wrong photo on the auction but shipped the right gun.

Yes,but if the guy also went to the trouble to send the buyer the serial number, one that can only be for a N frame?
Odds of other than that 27 arriving are pretty slim, imo.

We spoke on the phone and the pictures that I posted are of the gun he is shipping me. Looks like a 27, and it has a presentation box. Super nice guy and I don't get the feeling he is trying to pull anything. He thought it was a 686 and before the action closed I asked for the full serial number and model, and at that point he realized it was a 27-2. He gave me the option of cancelling or honoring my bid. Again, he is a nice guy. I will provide an update when I have it in my hands.

I don't have much room for non shooting "stuff" either. I have broken them up and never regretted it. I have sold original grips and boxes. I have sold presentation case also on a gun I will never sell. After I'm gone who will care. Not me.

It drives ALL of us nuts! Even if we're one of the guys who only a day or two earlier posted about the great deal that WE got.

Just picked up my "686"!!
Seller shipped over night at no additional cost and picked it up today. Besides having a little oxidation that cleaned right up with a little Fitz, my new 27-2 is in outstanding condition! The box is also in great condition, maybe nicer than my other one. I am torn over whether to sell it or not, but I can't wait to shoot it!

you may your mind on day about boxes. shoot it and enjoy it,but never throw away, sell, dispose of any boxes, tools, papers. there are way to many that way now and the longer you keep it together, the more it will be worth.if nothing else, play with it a while, sell everything to someone and buy a 27 without the box. lots of them around. you will be money ahead.

I have to agree with the posters that say to keep the box and docs with the gun and sell it all as a package if you need to sell. Beautiful Model 27 you got at a very nice price. You can easily make money on that package if you sell.
One thing, my Model 29-2 8 3/8" bbl. with SN. N3230xx came with a presentation case that looks a lot like yours except it has 2 latches on it instead of one as in your picture. I kept the presentation box but don't remember getting the shipping case for the gun or the box. All my docs were under the blue-flocked insert and are still there.

I'd say keep the package all together. The problem with parting it up is one day if you decide to sell it you wont have all the goodies which some people desire to come with the gun.
BTW Jamesr14, did you happen to sell a 4" Model 28 recently? I think I may be the person who bought it from you
