My new 29-2
I just picked this up at the show in Orlando, it has never been fired. It would be painful not to fire this gun but what would you do? How do I determine the date of the gun?

Just going by the case, it is a 1976-1978.
Put up the serial and someone will let you know. but if it is in correct case that's the date...
SHOOT IT!!!! You'll LOVE it....
Its a beauty...congratulations!

Ser# is N700xxx, I believe it is 1980. I sold my first model 29 6" a few years ago and always regretted it. I used to shoot bowling pins at 100 yds. I purchased it to shoot but due to the un-fired condition I am having second thoughts I guess...

Man, that is a beautiful piece. If it were mine I'd shoot it and do it often.

Short of burglarizing the vault at S&W (if there is one), you may never have a chance to fondle and fire such a nice find of a 29-2. I would lovingly shoot her and clean her and wipe her down and do it all over again, without hesitation.
Congratulations!

Congratulations on the purchase and I feel you pain as I bought a Nickel 27-2 with 5 inch barrel 5 years ago and it's still unfired.

Awesome gun! Shoot it! Clean and repeat.
Find an S serial or pre model to put in the dark corner of your safe.

I am sorry I passed up on a 29-2, I was offered in trade for my Colt 1911. Instead I traded for a 624 6", which after talking to S&W needs to go in for a recall. Even if it weren't, for versatility alone, I should have gone with the 29-2.
Congratulations!

Shoot it and enjoy it. What fun is a safe queen? Like 00buck said, get a pre-29 or earlier s-prefix 29-2 to set back in the safe.
Thats a nice looker you got there.

Beautiful gun you got there. I believe I'd shoot it. My wife hit me with the ultimate logic not long ago about that question. She said "When you're dead and gone, someone else is going to shoot it. Why shouldn't you enjoy it while you're still alive?"
I'm trying to work a deal on a 4", 29-2 now. <lol> And I've got a 24-3 on hold at the LGS too, so I'm scrambling to sell some stuff I've got. The 29-2 deal came up quickly and is too good to pass up. I just hope it comes together for me.

Yes I wondered how original the grips are and as someone else mentioned the display case might not be. I am reloading as I type this and heading to the range later today.
