Interesting question. I have a pair of round butt magnas with black washers, stamped 795xxx. That dates them to 1968. They are not diamond grips.
I'd like to hear more about this as well.

As I understand it, S&W standardized on stainless circle inserts around 1973, but in typical fashion they used up whatever inventory was on hand. Prior to then, only stainless guns had stainless inserts. I recently looked at a 12-2 that dated to around 1975 and it had matching stocks with blued steel inserts. The Model 12's (into the 1980's) used unique grips that were different from standard K frame grips, so it's understandable.
Then again, I've been wrong before!

Reason I ask is I have a model 28 from the late 80's with really nice black washer magnas. If they aren't original I would like to sell or trade them for targets.

The latest stocks with black oxide stock circles date to 73-74. I am sure the stocks on your 28-2 are replacements for the originals.

The stock circles on your stocks should be stainless for a gun shipped in the 80s. There may also be a serial number on the right stock panel. If there is, it will give you an idea of how old the stocks are.
