Model 36 serial number
Hello
Would a Chiefs Special with serial number 71J636 be of 1983 vintage?
SCSW does not go this high.
Thanks.

Another of the 1971-'72 "floating J" guns, with a J and up to 6 total characters; 1J1 to 999J99. Hope this is helpful.

Thanks, Alan. That does help. I completely forgot about the 1971-72 anomaly.

Alan
While we are talking about Chiefs Specials, how likely is it that one with a serial number around 571900 would have been shipped in a box that does not have the Bangor Punta label? One end has the old style lettering in four lines: Smith & Wesson - .38 Chiefs Special - Blue Finish Model 36 - Round Butt 2-inch Barrel. The other end has a label with all the correct information.
My dilemma is what appears to be a pre-BP box (pre-1965) with a gun that probably shipped in 1968 or 1969. The stocks are non-diamond and appear to be properly fitted to the gun.
Any thoughts? Also, the latch is not flat.
Thanks.
Jack

My guess would be - thrifty S & W factory using up an older box from inventory, if you are certain the label is original.

Thanks, Alan. I thought of that, but it seemed like too long a gap: 1965 to 1968. But that probably is the correct deduction, because the label does not look like the counterfeits we've seen.
