Default My one and only

As a young officer in the late 70s my ideal duty weapon was a 5" M27. My chief had a phobia of barrels over 4". A friend's father offered me a 3.5" M-27, but wanted $200 cash, which I didn't have. I traded a 1926-era 6" M&P and a Remington 870 for a NIB S-series 4" M28-2 marked at $150. It served me well in uniform and as my go-to stakeout/raid gun later on.

Last year about this time I was blessed to find this pre-27 in an auction where everyone else was asleep. The SN would indicate about 1950 production. The letter shows 1953 shipment.

Over the years this is the fifth nickel revolver (and third nickel S&W) I have owned, and the only one I still do. It shoots every bit as well as that 28-2.

No, not at all. I've seen many of his posts. All museum quality stuff. Looks like S&W heaven to me. I find myself drawn to all things 27 and 29. Rkmesa is a kindred spirit, with a lot more resources. That man could stock a mighty fine S&W museum.

I am 49 years old. I Have collected guns since I was 12. I finally got a 27-2 today! It's freeking awesome. The trigger is like pouring water out of a Cristal Brandy sifter. SN s255127 mod 27-2 can you tell me what year this was made? My cosin let me shoot his "pre 27 5 screw" years ago. I have wanted one ever since. Just got to love that checkered topstrap and that awesome trigger. I am gonna fill deer permit with it this November. Thanks for any help you have.

I like any caliber s&w n frame from a 4" barrel up to 8 3/8". Doesn't have to be a m27 but a m28/ m29/ m58/ m57/ m24/ m25 will do too. But I also like the ruger Redhawk frame too.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on picking up arguably one of the finest revolvers ever made! S&W did not always ship in SN order, so the exact ship date can only be determined by a historical letter. I have SN S255273, a 3.5" barreled 27-2 that shipped in April 1964 and I would expect that yours shipped somewhere close to that time frame. We would love to see a photo or two of your new find...

Richard...thank you for the reply. I will take some pics. I guess I should include my 66 no dash, my 48-3, also the 2206, and sw22 victory. Maybe over the weekend I can have my collage age son show me the best way to upload pics to this forum. Thanks again!

The .357 magnum 125 grain semi jacketed hollow point ammo moving at approx. 1450 FPS from a 4" service revolver was considered one of the most devastating man stoppers in human history. It's yet to be beat by any of the poly striker wonder nines in terms of raw energy dump and knockdown power.

This popped up on Armslist locally, I called the guy at 6AM, he didn't seem to mind and I met him at 1PM and brought it home. A sheer joy to shoot, clean, polish, hold, whatever. The best of the best. 5" Pre-27.

I think most of us started out with 357 magnum revolvers many years or decades ago. We ventured out into other calibers. Even pistols. We/I just got back into 357 magnums again. That's it I came full circle to where I started.

Now the m27, m28 do feel nice in my hand. Years ago I couldn't find a used 357 magnum revolver people were hanging on to them. The internet has opened up a whole new avenue for sales instead of being limited to your LGS.

I guess that I have a soft spot in my heart for the model 27 too. I started out with my 5" 27-2 as my first pistol of any kind back in 1974 that I bought new for $200. I still have it too. Since then I've acquired another 5 to keep it company:

Default S&W Mod. 27s

Glenncal1 states it nicely, when he says that the Mod. 27s are the coolest mod. of the S&W line of revolvers. I would go one step further, and call them the most exquisitely designed, and finished S&W revolver, or for that matter any other brand revolver. any fancier, and they would appear garish, any less, and they would be too plain, as is , "just right". Here is a poor picture of my favorite 27, wearing Keith Brown grips, made from my fiddleback maple wood. Thanks, Jim for, opening this thread again. It helps point out why the 27, is the favorite revolver of so many, and why I have four of them, more than any other S&W Mod. Thanks for sharing.

1. They are N frames. Sorry fans of M, I, J, K, L etc. but N frames are just cooler than any of the others. I love K frames but the N frames beat them out. Blame Dirty Harry.

2. Caliber. .38/.357 is the premier revolver cartridge. The .357 started us all down the path to high power hand gun rounds. They also served as the standard LE round for many years. They would still be used if you could come up with a 15 round K frame.

3. 27's are available in just about any barrel length you need from 3.5" to 8 3/8"

4"

5"

6"

6.5"

8 3/8"

4. You can also get any of these in nickel if thats what floats your boat.

5. They have great bluing and the triggers are among the best Smith ever produced.

6. Now before you start your counter arguments about why some other model is more cool than the 27, there is one thing the 27 has that no other model does. It has the checkering on the top strap. Sorry the argument ends there

That is my story and I am sticking to it.

Anyone mind if I bump a 5 year old thread? I’ve had many N frames over the years but never a 27. Never in the right place at the right time with cash in hand I suppose. Have owned Plenty of 25, 28, 29, 57, 58 but never a 27. Finally righted that wrong a couple weeks ago. Now have a 27-2 6” and 3.5”. Thanks to a kind forum and SWCA member. They are indeed super cool. Now looking for a 8.675” and a nickeled 27.

I like s&w N frames because they come in most calibers that I like. There like driving the same model car but with different engines. Only the hole diameter in the barrel changes. Can’t own just one.

What’s wrong with the m28’s. These are just as good as the m27 but made for leo’s. There collectable too.

I admit my stainless goes out in all types of weather.

I thought this thread started out about the model 27s why are some hi-jacking it? Aren't there plenty of other threads about the model 28?

... why are they the coolest??? Because they were always high polish and came in both blue and nickel finishes and were often the canvas for factory engravers to show off their talent. Here are a couple of 27-2s that look great together...

There you go Steve... back on track.

My m27-2, and m28 no dash. The m28 is the redheaded step child. She’s not a looker to most but she’s pretty to me, inside she touts the 357 mag just like her older brother. I like her industrial look too.

I over heard a firearms instructor say stainless of nickel is better because the bad guy in the dark might be imitated by the size of the hole in the barrel.

The 27 is the pistol version of a Spartan hoplite in a tuxedo: stately, polished, looks good and totally capable at any moment of killing in a very violent and efficient manner.

The only problem I have with the 27 (besides the fact that I am currently 27/RM-less) is the caliber. My perfect gun is the 27 configuration chambered in .44 Special, that's the ultimate.

I just bought another 27-2. That makes 3 in a month. Now I have a 3.5, 6, and 8.375”. I may have overpaid on the latest but clean specimens are getting hard to find and I don’t see the price dropping.

That is one that recently made its way into my collection - a relocation from a gracious forum member. I have not received a letter on it yet, but it is class A engraved by Russ Smith and it shipped in April 1968. The engraving is very nice and it is a wonderful example of what factory engravers were capable of if they were given the time and resources to turn out a masterpiece.

One of these days I will do a full photo shoot on this beauty with my good camera, but in the meantime, here are a couple of stand-alone iPhone photos:

All the best,

I would say "beautiful nickel" vs "brute nickel". That is one shiny 27-2 and I love the smooth presentation target stocks.

Thanks for sharing,

The 3.5 inch 357 N frame is the best looking firearm ever made period, in my mind. They also give up nothing to most of today's full lug medium frame revolvers in portability. Its a shame that S&W never produced a 627 with a 3.5 inch half lug, tapered barrel.

Far be it from me to argue with the premise of this thread. The Model 27 and its predecessor the .357 Magnum have always been the glamour flagships of the Smith and Wesson line. This one is my pride and joy among many.

After additional thought, I’d like to add a few more of my opinions, and more information, pertaining to the S&W, Mod.27, shown in post, #168

I respect, and agree with S&W’s decision to make the 27, the flag-ship, of their revolvers, and still consider it thus today.

I agree with the FBI, the CIA, and the many other notable, revolver authorities, that have proclaimed the S&W, 27, 3.5” to be the, ultimate, classic defense revolver.

My Mod. 27, 3.5”, is shown displayed on a home-brewed stand, wearing K. Brown grips, made from fiddle back maple wood. It’s been used a lot, but has never been abused, or neglected. I’d like to mention, that the tree that produced that wood, was jointly, planted, in front of our patio, by my mom, and my wife 65+ years ago. That tree was removed as a safety hazard.

This concludes my rant on S&W Mod. 27 3.5” revolvers.

A few years ago I thought it would be nice to have 27s in different barrel
lengths so this was the family of 27s that I put together.

Top to bottom,
1959 "S" 8 3/8"
1960 "S" 6.5"
1961 "S" 6"
1975 "N" 5"
1957 pre-27 4" (one of only a handful produced)
1955 pre-27 3.5"
1968 "S" nickel 27-2

I sold all of them except for two.......

I kept my 6.5" 27 that was shipped March 11th 1960 and added these
pristine Coke Bottle Stocks.
This is my favorite gun and IMO the epitome of .357 Magnums.

I also kept my brother's beautiful 5" 27-2 shipped September 4th 1975.

I also sold my nice unfired since leaving the factory 627-2.
One of only two guns that I wish I had kept.
