While I don’t have too many revolvers in my humble collection of handguns, this S&W Model 27-2 from Dayton Gun Headquarters shipped mid-1964 is the top wheel gun I possess.
Back then, Joe Hanen of Dayton/Hanen Special Model 14-2 fame was running the distributorship. These beauties in their deep blue and checkered top straps must have been the ‘halo’ guns of the time, designed to bring foot traffic into the shop in the hope of selling either the 27 or another lesser model. I imagine Visiting Dayton Gun HQ was like visiting Galpin Ford in California to see the new Shelby Mustang models.
I don’t have much history on my 27-2, other than that I inherited it from my grandfather [I doubt he was the first owner though]. Besides the family heirloom connection. I like how this 3 ½” barreled variant speaks to anyone who gazes upon it. Warning: This dog bites!!!

Unfortunately no. I believe the original stocks were of the diamond / checkered variety as that would be correct for 1964. The LOA does state that the gun shipped with checkered Goncalo Alves stocks, but did not specify Magnas or Targets. When I inherited the revolver it wore GA target stocks, sadly also not numbered to the frame. I personally like the Magnas more on N-frame guns, Targets on K-Frames.

the only thing the pre 29s early 29s and i believe the first 57s had over a 27 was the "coke" target grips. the later S&W targets are just so fat mid toward the butt end. If S&W would have seen it to install the Coke targets on the pre 27s, earlier 27s, that would have been the cream on the pie. I think the Magna grips feel and also look good. Dryheat`s photo up a ways in thread shows Magna CP grips, sweet! and of course the pre war Magna stocks are tops.

That's why I had a friend find me a pristine set of Cokes for my 6.5" 27.

My 6.5" 29-2 and my 27. Both wearing Cokes.

Here’s my m27-2 nickeled, the m27-2 & m28-0 in blue so no one gets jealous. It’s like a brides wedding day, , something shiney, something bright blue, something dull blue, they all rock. Any caliber as long as it’s a N frame. I like RedHawks too. Big frame women too.

Here is my 27-2, 5”, from the late 70’s. It is wearing grips from
BluMagnum, super slim Skeeter Skelton style. The scratch on the
hammer and other issues are when new from the factory. QC
was not great back then either.

Sort of an odd thread to pick for this question, you'd get faster responses with a new thread.
But, We also need more info in order to better answer.
1- What is the SN, so we can approximate age; 2- we need pictures, to help establish condition; 3- is it just the revolver, or is there an original box, tools and paperwork included; 4- Are there a supply of cartridge cases with it, as nobody makes ammunition for the M53. All these things add or detract from value.

As an example, a 4-screw (early) M53 in ANIB condition is worth probably $2500, a 3-screw ANIB is about $1800, if you interpolate the 7 year-old values listed in the SCSW. Those values drop to about $800 and $650 for fair condition revolvers.

If S&W would make an eight shot model 27 with quality parts,,I would stop carrying an auto and start buying new S&W’s again.

There are 6 variations of the 8 shot, carbon steel, Model 27. Four in blue and two in nickel

Which one do you want?

I shoot the 8 shot, 3 1/2" blue Model 27 most often

Default Great Thread!

The 27's are far & away my favorite Smith & Wesson. I only have one, a 27-2 3.5 " that Mr. Jinks stated, left the Smith & Wesson Factory in April of 1968. I would absolutely love to have another..... at any rate, here's mine - I love those lazy ampersand's. Lol, didn't even know they existed until I bought this one a month or so ago!

I only have one - a pre-27 in 6". That seems to be the least popular length for some reason, but I like it a lot. I shoot home cast 358429s out of it almost exclusively. Just seems appropriate to this gun's heritage. I have the numbered magnas but it shoots better for me with a pair of early diamond targets so it wears those now, with the factory magnas safely stashed. I plan to order an El Paso Saddlery carved belt and crossdraw holster for it. I have 5 .357s but it's my favorite, followed closely by a 3-screw Ruger flattop 4 5/8".

My addition to the thread.
A 27-2 from the early ‘70’s before they came with the wood presentation box. Just a standard 27, except for the Culina stocks.
Even being standard it’s very classy.

Wound up with this 5" from a friend, full 1970s Mag-na-port package, chrome bore, hard chrome cylinder, jeweled hammer and trigger, fabulous trigger, ported of course.....not going anywhere 😊

Sure, it is missing some of the bling, but ALL of the function is there!
My 28 no dash 6 incher, is mighty nice. Maybe if I had a 27, I'd agree. Regardless enjoy your 27, they are a fine sought after Smith. Bob
Same gun different make-up artist. If I were to carry one in rough terrain, or just expect heavy duty wear and tear, I'd carry a Highway Patrolman.
Either way, given the guns will handle anything from 38 wadcutters to Buffalo Bore 357 Tank Killers
( I made that one up) , 27/28 are strongest most versatile handgun going. Just my 0.02

And this is my major problem with this forum. I have a couple 14's and a 19 and some other .357 mags (Smith and others). I don't care to shoot .357 Mag at the range so I never had the "need" for an early M 27.

Until now.

Here's my November '77 27-2 6"
I've got a letter request in. Can't wait to see what Mr. Mundell says about her. So interesting learning where they originally shipped to among other things
Thanks for letting me add mine too

Yes. Yes, you do.
The 27-2 is just amazing. With its tapered barrel & all the other goodies that you find when just taking your time to really look at them, they are art imo.
It's just incredible what Smith & Wesson were doing back then.

Why did S&W make Model 27 in 3 1/2 " and 5" when all other magnums Model 19 ,29 and 57 were made in 4" and 6" ?

They aren't. That title goes to the Smith & Wesson 38/44 Outdoorsman. Hands down.
