Default H stamped on 28-2 cylinder

This may have been addressed before...but I can't find it. Is it normal to have an "H" stamped on the rear face of a M28-2 cylinder? Could this be a replacement part? Thanks.

The H was stamped on the back of the HP cylinders to identify them as such and so they wouldn't get the high polish of the 27 cylinders. Yours would be original. Hope that clears it up.

What diamonback68 said. Get a flashlight and look on the back of the extractor star for a serial number. As I understand it, the "H" (Highway Patrolman) was used to communicate the finish to the polishing department, similar to the way nickel cylinders were stamped "N".

The cylinders I've seen with an "L" on the back were from around 1960 +/-. It indicates a Left hand tread on the ejector rod.

Interesting. Mine is a 28-2, #N974XX, so comes from 69-72 according to the list in the "Ultimate" thread. Maybe something odd?

Have you looked on the back of the extractor star for a serial number?
