Default value of 28-2

Local shop has a new in the box 28-2, 6 inch barrel with both magna and target gtips. No papers or tools. He is asking $575, with tax and processing it comes to $610. What do the more learned think of this? Thanks

Buy It, in my opinion about the best price I have seen for a 28-2 with box and extra stocks. The 28-2 is an excellent all round .357. I paid $525 two years ago for my 28-2 6" with no box or extra stocks. I enjoy taking it to the range and not having to worry about the finish like I do with my pre-27s and 27s. They are all great shooters but I don't mind letting another shooter try my 28, with my 27s I am much more reluctant to share.

I would be on the fence at that price. If you really want a new in the box 28-2 6" barrel, go get it.

Honestly I'd offer him 500 and see if he would negotiate. It's a little (not too much) high IMHO, but I don't think you would lose money on it in the long run.

$610? And here I was thinking I may have my 28-2 overpriced after a few days in the classifieds ($525 shipped with an extra 4" barrel). Do I really need to buy a $30 set of magna grips off ebay to sell it? I guess I just don't get the need for original (uncomfortable) grips on a shooter 357.

The OP's gun is described as "new in box"
I'd guess the Magnas are original to the gun so that means that the extra target stocks could potentially be worth $75 to $125.

How can this not be a smokin deal? ($610 OTD)

I don't know what the market price is for a 28-2, but the SCoS&W and the BlueBook say it is under $500 ANIB.

Give me the address of the shop. I'll go down there and assess it. Just look at it, I swear....

I agree with VM.

You have to figure that the Target Stocks are worth $50 at least, same for the box. Note that these are very conservative estimates. Either one or both of these items could easily go for more.

So that leaves a like new N-Frame magnum S&W for $510 out the door.

Personally, I have a lower condition M28 that I would sell, then add in a couple more C-Notes and run to the shop to get that one.

Is it a S prefix or the later N if it's an early S with Diamond grip's i would value it more, but if it is a later N without diamond's i would think it to high, also does everything number together, Box, grip's and gun, the target's wont be, but Diamonds in good shape are worth more than non Diamond's

The price looks good to me for a NIB 28-2. Either extra targets or a 4” barrel boost the price about the same amount.
What's not been addressed is if the O.P. wants a good looking NIB example enough to pay the extra money for NIB or if he's going to be careful to preserve that way. If he wants a rough & ready utility shooter he may as well save some money and buy one that’s already been broken in.

I guess I just don't understand buying a NIB 28-2. It isn't ever going to be worth a ton of money, and definitely not if you shoot it on any regularity. For a collector trying to fill a void... maybe. I suppose that there are those out there that will pay $50 for a set of factory targets, but I'm not one of them. As to selling the box and grips off to have $510 in a like new 28, why bother? If you aren't going to keep it as an all original set (and not put many rounds through it), then I can't see paying that much just to "part out" the extras.

I'm with this guy, I see 700 and 800$ "NIB" 28-2's recently and dont understand it myself.

I bought a super clean 28 no dash last year on GB for $450. S serial#2011xx. (1960) 6" barrel. Goodyears, and no extras. Have 4 sets of grips for it now. It is my favorite revolver to date! Get one, you'll love it! Bob

I didn't mean you had to part out the extras, just trying to give an idea of how much money would be tied up in the gun alone. Personally, if the box is its original box, I would never separate it from the gun.

Each person will have his own idea of what it will be worth in the future. For me, it is worth the asking price right now. I don't see the price dropping as time passes. But I wouldn't be buying it as an investment. Like I said, it would be an upgrade to replace one of lesser condition that I now possess.

If I could get $75 or so for the targets, I would probably let them go for that. Some of us enjoy "wheeling and dealing" whether it involves large sums of cash or not.

Thanks for all the responses. i think that i will pass based on the answers. the magnas are not diamond's, or are the checkered targets. If someone else is interested, it is at pete's gunshop in Skippack, pa. I have no ties with that shop, it was the first time I have ever been there. Ken

kb, as I mentioned in an earlier reply, the 28 is a gun that you would really like. If you have your heart set on 1, it will pop up when you least expect it. Be ready to jump on it, because someone will want to scarf a good one up. Love mine! Bob

Just my 2 cents .. and not with a lot of background either .... "but" .. prices are regional. I've seen model 19s inVirgina that I could bring back to NY and sell in a day for a 200.00 profit. Also saw an M1A1 gor for 500 less there than it would have here.
4" M28 in a local gun shop that loooked to me to be in excellent condition was in the 400's .. didn't ask about the box. .. "But" thats here not there ...
