Model 28-2
Just ran across a family member with a Model 28-2 with 6 inch barrel, diamond grips and serial number of S224805. Not much wear and tear, some rust spots under the grips. Overall looks nice. Any one with an idea of when it was made?

If it is a 28-2, I don't believe it would have the screw in front of the trigger guard.

I don't think it would/should either being a dash 2 but serial # wise being so close to the transition I thought I'd ask anyway

So if I had an unfired version, would it kill it too badly to A) shoot it and/or B) polish it?

1961-1962 is correct
Yes...s/n dates the revolver to 1961-1962. The 28-2 was introduced in 1961 with the elimination of the trigger guard screw. Diamond stocks remained standard until 1968. Nice revolver to have, you ought to see if your relative will sell it to you.
For Stick895- lots of opinions on whether or not to shoot an unfired, NIB revolver. If you intend to keep it as a collectable or to sell it to a collector, unfired brings the premium $. However, if you want to enjoy a great .357 revolver, shoot it. HPs were meant to be shot! Be careful when you "polish" your unfired HP. The finish is supposed to be duller than the Model 27s, and they will not polish bright blue. You may be better off, unless you have some surface rust, to just clean and oil it, then get some Renaissance Wax to protect the finish.
