Default Model 48 serial number

Just picked up a Model 48-2, 6 inch blue. Nice gun, good finish, looks like it wan't fired much. Grips are nice, but not diamond - probably swapped in the past, oh well. According to the S&W Catalog, all info about serial #'s mentions K and a number - production began at K348746. This gun is 6K3XXX. Is this typical? There is an assembly number on the yoke and frame (matching). Looks like a nice 3 screw shooter, hope to try it next week

Gary,

S&W started adding the Number Prefix to the K's when the K-Frame Serial-Numbered Revolvers reached K999,999 in approx. 1970!! Yours with the Numeral 6 Prefix should date your Revolver to approx. 1974 & would not have Diamond Grips anyway so the ones that are presently on yours are most likely correct as long as they're not aftermarket!! The 48's of that era were available with either Magnas or Targets so if they're the latter they won't be Serial No.'d!! On the other hand if the Magnas are correct they will most likely be numbered to your Revolver!! I've never seen a pair stamped with the Full Serial No. after they started the Numeral Prefix, just the part of the Serial Number after the the K!! Hope this helps!!
