Pawn Shop Rescue - Pics added
Another 28-2 rescue. Here's a couple of initial pics. I gotta clean her up yet and get her some proper shoes. Then I'll post some more pics. It's a pinned and recessed model, serial #N5820xx. I'm thinking 1979 vintage. Anyone able to zero in any closer? No box, and I wish it didn't have the yellow front sight insert, but for 350 bucks I guess I shouldn't complain too much!
Before
Magnas
Targets
Yellow insert - not factory, but professional!
I'm beginning to get this photo thing mastered!!

Those pawn shops are bad places.
I had to rescue this Model 27 out of one this week.

Well, if you got it for the price of the Cokes, THAT'S a rescue! Beautiful piece. I would've rescued it too. What kind of holster is that?

$350 was an excellent purchase. I can't help but think about the poor schmuck who was paid $100 for it by the pawnshop. If they sold it for 350 I doubt they paid much over a C note for it.
Looks like it was a working gun. Someone added the colored sight insert and the Pachs. Is the insert actually yellow or is it faded orange? Yellow is popular with guys who work at night.

I passed on one of these once a few years ago at a local pawn shop and have regretted it every time I think about it. What a great price, congrats on your new gun.

I am curious... How do you buy a gun from a pawn shop? Can they do the instant background check? Like I feel I am missing out on some great opportunities to add to my collection.

Here you have to have a background check, along with a three day wait before you can get a perchace permit (that's good for a year). A CCW permit is a bit different (and good for five years). Anyway, once you have one or the other, there isn't anymore background checks (already been done getting the permit) and you are good to go. They check your permit, you pay yhe cash and gone.

If a pawnshop deals in firearms it has an FFL just like a gun shop would have. Buying a gun in a pawnshop is absolutely no different than buying from a gun shop except most pawnshops don't have many, if any new guns. They deal in used guns for the most part. There are exceptions and I have seen pawnshops operating as real gun shops.

You done good at that price. I bought two 28-2s with four inch barrels in the last year. Had $400 in one and about $425 in the other. Neither had original stocks, but I can live with that. I really like 'em, and they shoot great. Even carried one concealed a bit this winter.
That serial number shows a DOB in early 1980.

Ken L you got a heck of a deal! I don't think you did a bad job on the photos either. Slap some lumber on that piece and you'll have it all. Congrats.

Its definitely yellow and looks professionally done, so may have been done my a smith or possibly someone who's just very good with a small file and filler. I'm cleaning her up tonight and will post some "after" pics.

Well, I got her cleaned up and tried some better grips. I think I've settled on the targets. I like them the best. The magnas look pretty good, but the set I have doesn't really fit the frame right. As you can see, the yellow insert is well done. It just ain't right. I don't believe this was a carry gun as there are no signs of holster wear anywhere. And, though there is a turn ring, it is nearly indiscernible. There are some very minor scratches here and there and a spot on the muzzle that looks like somebody may have dropped it on a hard surface, but otherwise the gun is in minty condition. I think its a keeper! At least until that pre-28 5 screw, in the box, comes along!

The targets are the answer, in my book! I bought a 6" no dash last year for $450 on GB, and thought I was doing good. It is very clean, and has a S serial #. 1960 gun. Enjoy your steal/deal 28! Bob

Great guns you guys. Iggy, you may have stolen the show. Tisk-tisk.
I like the yellow insert. It is a good looking job. As SP notes, yellow and white were very popular with a couple shooters I knew because they did show up much better than "red" at night. I was never a police officer but I always figured night time would be shotgun-time, if there was any shooting to be done.

Sometimes, pawn shops are GOOD things...I'm watching a 1978 6" 27-2 right now. It has some rust on the trigger guard and some reparable damage to the grips. Gonna keep negotiating with them till it gets to a reasonable price, then it'll come home.....

Ya done good. I found one several years ago at a gun show. A guy was walking around with it in the original box and only wanted $250 for it. It was a 4" with original magnas. It doesn't have a front sight insert. I also have a 6" five screw Highway Patrolman that has a yellow front sight insert that I found a couple of weeks before tripping over the 4". Is it possible this insert came from the factory? I've always wanted to know but never really researched it. I got this one for $200 no box or docs. My personal preference for the Highway Patrolman is magna grips. Most that I have seen seem to have come that way.

I think the standard grip was the magnas, but they could be ordered with targets. I have seen original guns in the box with the end label marked with a T in the grips box. I don't know if they were all special order or if Smith just sent em' out with targets too. The magnas are nice but for fit and feel and shootability, ya gotta go with the T's!

Yes, S&W cataloged a yellow ramp in the '70s, and probably later. A friend of mine returned several guns to have yellow ramps installed. I imagine a new gun could have been special ordered with a yellow ramp, especially for a police officer.
In that era, law enforcement orders always got priority at S&W. I know of one 4-inch Model 29 ordered with a white ramp that I feel sure no private citizen could have gotten out of S&W, but it was ordered by a police department and the gun came as requested.

The "Cokes" aren't S&W stocks. I think they are Eagles.
The holster is a discontinued Bianchi.
In Wyoming, the possession of a concealed permit removes the need for background checks. You fill out the forms, pays your money, and walks out the door.

Russell,
Things is so far apart out here, that it helps if the bullet is half way there afore it comes out of the gun.
Why we put salt on our bullets when we go huntin' so the meat don't spoil before we git there.
