Wow! This post seems to have become somewhat of a debate. I
wonder if I can express an opinion without incurring any thrown bricks.
There seems to be a prevailing attitude on here that money is no
object; if you want it, buy it, you didn't pay too much you bought too
soon and so on, but it seems to me that 300.00 to get a barrel that
you removed and reinstalled, shortened one inch is a lot of money any way you choose to look at it. But it's YOUR money. Beyond that however is this thing about five inch barrels. I love the looks and
balance of the 4" N-frames and have 4" 27s, 28s, 29s, 25s, & a HD. I also have a 6" 28. The 4" guns have balance and are handy and the 6" guns
are obviously better for hunting but the 5" length seems to offer
nothing in particular. Some folks seem smitten with the mythical
qualities somehow inherent in the 5" barrel length but the advantage
gained by reducing a good 6" field gun by one inch escapes me. I could
see cutting it back to 4" easier than 5". But, thats just me and in
truth there are many 28s out there so to each his own.

Well, that's your opinion, and as you said, it's MY money. I've worked hard all my life and am able to enjoy myself in my later years doing what I want to do, and I will spend MY money the way I want to, not how someone else thinks I should. To each his own. You like 4 and 6 inch barrels? I like 4, 5, and 6 inch barrels, and if I can have some 5 inch barreled guns, I will. By the way, I also have a 5 inch Model 27 that is original, and a 4 inch Model 28.

5" Model 28 - I like it! The only thing that I would have done different would be a gold bead front sight. OP - Jordan Troopers?

Bill, nice 5" 28. I'll give you $300.00 for it! Kidding, of course. I'll check it out at the October meeting.

Yes, most of my shooters have Jordan Troopers on them, because they work for me.

Sweet! I've had similar thoughts on finding a long-barrelled 28 and having it cut to five inches. Well-done!

a) It's ok, though there are occasionally bricks thrown here they are of an electronic nature, so they don't leave much of a mark
b) 4 inchers are good too, and I have several, but IMO and for me they do not balance or handle as well as a 5 inch gun, and as far as hunting goes it is much more a matter of how well you can hit your target than a function of barrel length
c) see b.
d) could not agree more.

Took the gun to the range today to see how it shoots. Shot two handed, single action at 25 yards. It shot well, for me, as my eyesight is not what it used to be. I'm happy with it, and the next time I'm going to shoot it off of a rest to see how it does.
I shot .38 Specials loaded with 12 grains of Alliant 2400, W-W small pistol magnum primers, and Speer 160 grain semi-jacketed bullets. I also shot .357 Magnums loaded with 6.3 grains of Unique, small pistol primers, and cast SWC bullets with gas checks.
When I shoot off the rest next time I will shoot some of my .38 Specials loaded with 148 grain HBWC, 3.2 grains of W-W 231, and small pistol primers.

If people don't like what others do with they're S&W's, they shouldn't comment. Its a personal choice that we make to have what we think is a perfect gun that S&W didn't make on a regular basis. I see lots of cars that young kids own that they sunk a lot of money into and will loose as the car ages. Heck, I just spent 1300.00 on converting a K-22 to a 32 long. Guess since I know bill, he must be rubbing off on me. In fact I just talked to him on the phone abt an hour ago. Hey Bill, at the NE Ohio bunch we can thing up some more goofey projects and have fun with them. Can't wait to see you're 5" HP. Larry

Model 28-2 barrel threads
Are the threads on the non-pinned barrels the same as the pinned barrels? I have a non-pinned 28-2 and I want to wrap out the 6inch barrel for a 4 incher but all I can find are the pinned barrels. Can I have a gunsmith swap the barrels and install a pin?

Yes they are the same. The pin is not necessary.

What I don't getis there are tons of 28-2 that are nothing but shooters and thats all they will ever be.Why does anyone care if someone wants to make one into a 5"or for that matter a 44 special or 45 colt. If it gets modified and used and makes the owner happy wonderful. Just what good is blue worn 28-2settting in a safe.
Guy is thrilled with his 5" 28 and that's a wonderful thing.

I'm with you. I don't care. I don't care one bit what another man does with his gun and his money. All I said was that I don't understand it. I also don't understand why so many are issuing personal insults. Mostly I don't understand digging up a 6 year old thread. It's an open forum and all I did was state an opinion. But, WHATEVER...Peace Love Dope!

I'm glad to have found this post as I am planning the same conversion.
5 inch nickel with TH, TT and gold bead front sight.
At present the only 45 Colt gun I have is a 25-2 with a extra cylinder in 45 Colt done by Trapper back in the 1980's.
