Welcome to the Forum. The ALW is the SN prefix, and it likely shipped in 1986. Both steel and alloy framed guns could have had the same prefix, depending on what the factory was producing at the time. Interesting coincidence though.

If it is an Airweight it is likely stamped MOD 37 on the frame, under the barrel with the cylinder out. Hope this is helpful.

Rubber stamp: CTG is part of the caliber designation, it's not a model designation.

Can you check if it is stamped MOD 36 or 37 on the frame? If it is a model 36, it simply has an Airweight stamped barrel - both are steel and the same part except the rollmark. If it has an alloy (non-magnetic) frame, someone mis-stamped it as a MOD 36, which has a steel frame. Thought this would be easy, huh?

Swing out the cylinder, in the area where it hinges there should be a MOD 36 or MOD 37, As black as the frame looks it's most likely the latter.

Mickey D: you are right, stamped mod.37 with 8x84x & a upsidedown 33 on the barrel arm. does that mean anything.
thanks again for the info:
