Default S&W 25-5 45 Colt

Starting to look for 25-5 with 4 inch barrel. 98%+ Dont see many for sale. 600-700 is about right? Any range reports? Thank You.

$600-700 sounds right to me for a 98% gun. I bought a 25-5 in shooter condition for $550 this spring.

Happy hunting.

Took me about 15 years to find one and I wasn't holding out for a 98% example. The 25-5 is also a transition gun in regards to the barrel pin. Many do not have it and you have to decide if this feature matters to you. The 4" isn't seen much although I don't know why they even made the longer barrels for this caliber. I paid $550 about 2 months ago but it's a little less than 98%.

Thumbs up My 25-5

I wouldn't give mine up for anywhere near that money. Mine is accurate with several loads. I prefer 255's at an even thousand. I had DWFan work some diamond cokes over for it. I'm more than proud of it.

I recently purchased a 25-5 4" off another forum member. It was not a 98% example but a nice shooter at maybe 95% . It proved accurate on it's first 2 range trips. The price was in the mid $600's.

I believe I paid a fair price and got a fair deal.

I bought this one new in 1980. I roundbutted it and carried as my police duty gun. My lieutenant talked me out of it a few years later.

Back in 2007, my LT, who went on to become a police chief in another state, sold it back to me. He passed away in 2009. He was the finest commander I ever worked for.

It ain't going anywhere now!

I bought a 25-5 4" a week ago for $425, with pachmayrs. It was about a 95% gun, minus the grips.

I saw another one today, with the right grips, a 98% gun, in presentation box with a list price of $899... crazy

I found this 25-5 last year. $400. Thought that to more than fair price.

I don't know much about 25-5 in 45 Colt. Just like the idea, I guess.

How do they shoot?
What ammo do they shoot best?
What the deal with a 4 inchers being so much more expensive?

My 25-5 4" is one of the better trades I've made.
I gave a co-worker a well-used Ruger 10/22 and a brick of ammo even for his 25-5. I had paid $75 for the 10/22.

He said the 25-5 was too expensive to shoot, so he was thrilled with the deal.

My 25-5 does really good with a hard cast 255 LSWC and 9.0 gr. of Unique.

I had a nice nickle 4" 25-5, probably 95%+ that I traded straight across a couple years ago for a 6" pre-27 with Cokes. I regret giving up he 25 and wish I'd had the cash at the time to just buy the pre-27, but I still think I got the better end of the trade (or at least fair).

The traditional conical lead bullet loadings from Winchester (255 grains) and Remington (250 grains) have a fairly soft lead bullet with a slightly concave base. They seem to slug up or down and shoot very well in a wide variety of .45 Colt revolvers with varying bore sizes and throat diameters. I find they shoot better for me in Colt and S&W revolvers than jacketed bullet commercial loads like W-W Silvertips or Federal 225 grain lead SWCs.

The 4 inch M-25-5 is probably the most popular because it is such a handy length, and the .45 Colt is a moderate pressure cartridge that doesn't need long barrels to develop their velocity. While a .357 or .44 Magnum is more pleasant to shoot with barrels of 6 inches or longer, the .45 Colt doesn't produce the same muzzle blast and racket the higher pressure Magnums do. 4 inch to 4-3/4 inch .45 Colt revolvers are still pleasant to shoot.

Goes good with fresh cake from the local bakery

If I ever wear out that 25-5, I will start shooting my 25-9

When the 25-9 wears out, I will get a double gun rig and use the 5 inch 25-7's.

I like my 45 Colts.
Well, If I had a chance, I'd grab a few of them pretty blue rocks also. They add a touch of "what's right" to a gun photo. Nice Iron you got layin' round.........

My 25-5 originally came from a snowbird. A resident of Quartzite did some work on a snowbird's RV in exchange for the 25-5. He in turn sold it to me for $500 and met me half way.

I'm down to just two 25-5s right now, one nickel, one blue, both 4" pinned barrels.

Yes, only Magnum cartridge and rimfire cylinders were recessed.

Now, I have a 5" 1950 Target .44 Special that is P&R. However, it started life as a 3 1/2" M27 that I had rechambered and rebarreled.

Sorry for the slip up. Trust me I know better and have corrected my post. Pinned and recessed just rolls out without thought. The barrels are pinned, only magnums and .22s recessed. Sorry for any confusion,

I picked up my 25-5 earlier this year from a forum member. I shoot a Lyman 255gr bullet with 8gr of Unique and keep them all in the black at 25 yards. The more I shoot it the more I really like it.

I got mine 4 yrs. ago. Blue 4" pinned, 96%+ then for $625 to
my door. Love it and more fun with a bigger hole than a 4"
M-29. It's just the right package for 45 colt.
