Default 29-2 appears to be unfired whats it worth?

Bought this today. spent 900$ on it. Came with all the accessories still in the original bag unopened with the little screw driver bore brush and swab and cleaning rod. Did I pay to much? Is it good for hunting? should I fire it? Tell me what y'all think. Cause i'm in love.

Looks pretty nice to me! And the gun is worth exactly what you paid for it! I would honestly have expected to see one like that for 1000 plus in the Seattle area.

I can't tell much by the photo but if it is unfired in my opinion you are right in the middle range on pricing.

I was hoping to hear that. Thanks. What about for hunting yes or no? I will use it to hunt mostly whitetail and they don't get so big were I live in Louisiana an never had a shot over 100yds. And thanks for the welcome.

The S&W model 29-2 is one fine revolver. I have 3 model 29s and am thinking about puchaseing another. Heres the deal. I brought one (29-2) 3 years ago that is absolutly mint. Its a 6 inch, not the 6 1/2 inch. I puchased it for $625.00. Today they bring much more. I havent shot mine. I am fortunate that I do have another one that is a dream to shoot. No Joke, these are the cats meow. I can only imagine what the early 29s where like. Its a very difficult choice, that ONLY you can make. Your going to hear both sides and everything in between, but ultimately only you cand make this choice. If you do shoot it you will love it. I would guess the way things are going you could probably shoot it and take really good care of it without loosing a dime. They are sweet.

I have taken every whitetail buck I've ever shot at (all 2 of 'em ) with that exact revolver. One at 40 yards, the other at 90 yards with open sights. The exit hole was impressive to say the least!

Now that's what I wanted to hear. Sounds great that's all the motivation I need. Its definitely going hunting with me this season. Thanks. What load would you recommend Ive got a lot of 240 gr Hornady hollow points that are darn accurate, or should I make a switch to some roundnose projectile?

I also used a 240gr SJHP. Don't remember what brand, but not Hornady. I see no reason whatsoever why they wouldn't work well. Good luck! Our bow season opens Wednesday.

That first round down the pipe is going to be a $300 shot...

I like the Hornady XTP's, but I use 200 grainers over 26.0 grains of IMR-4227. I kills whitetails cleanly out of 4" barrel and I would guess that it would be even more effective out a tube twice as long as that.

Chronographed out of a 4" barrel it runs 1255 FPS / 699 Ft./Lbs. and is pretty lethal on deer...

Whatever you decide you better get to it and start practicing... it's already mid August and deer season is right around the corner!

I can assure you that the 44mag is more than adequate for deer or antelope. That being said, make sure you know your limitations while hunting with it. Practice with the load that your are going to be hunting with and know the POI at the various distances that you may be shooting.

I killed my first antelope and numerous deer with a gun just like the one you purchased and never lost one. I shot Hornady 240 gr. JHP and Sierra 210 gr. JHP in my 29 (open sights only). Unfortunately I sold the 29 some years ago. I now shoot two Ruger Vaqueros in 44mag. Both are stainless. One 71/2 in and one 4 5/8 in. I have been shooting 240 gr. LSWC behind 8 gr. of universal in both of these guns. The front sight has been filed on both of these guns so that they shoot dead on at 100yds. I shot a real nice buck last year with this load and he didn't go 20 yds.

Get proficient with that gun and have fun hunting with it. It's a blast (pun intended) and it never gets old.

Good shooting and good hunting

Steve

Well fellas I thank all of you for the advice and I'm going this weekend to put the first rounds through it. Got some handloaded 240 gr hornady xtp with 20.4 grains of 2400 alliant powder. Ill go from there and see what happens.

Your load is sound for deer if it proves accurate. I've harvested many deer with a 44 Magnum and here are some tips:
-figure out the range you can keep the rounds on a pie plate and do not go beyond that- ever.
-No matter the max range, make sure the shot is good and steady with the angle you happen to have.
-Use the same cylinder hole for every first shot. Mark it and practice with rounds from it. This will give you max accuracy and confidence.
-Know your deer anatomy
-Do not track the deer until waiting 30 minutes. If you do not come along and force it up, it will lie down and bleed out (i've messed this up a couple times. Now I'm more disciplined)

I use 23 grains of WW296 with a magnum primer and a 240 gr Hornady XTP bullet. Its very acurate in my Moel 29-2 with 6 1/2" barrel. I have shot a half dozen deer with it from 15 yards out to 125 yards with excellent results. Ron.

That's what I was thinking. I was once told the easy way to think of your max range is the range at which you can place every round on a paper plate - no misses, no alibis. I have shot a lot of paper plates.

Nice looking gun. I don't like to comment on prices. It is worth to you what you paid for it. That's the way I feel when I make a purchase. Of course once in a while some killjoy will come along and tell me I was wrong.

I just noticed your comment about your handload. Looks good. The bullet may be heavier than necessary for whitetails but I would rather have a bit more penetration than too little. Let us know how you do with your new revolver.

Well its a little late but here;s the range report. I shot 2'' groups at 25 yards with great consistency but the hanging target was swinging so bad it would take me 15 minutes to let the target settle and once i fired the shot it would go to swinging again, pendulum almost. So I would continue to shoot even with the target swinging like a mad man and very dark range I shot sub 2'' groups a couple times. Is this decent or should I try and tune the hand-load for better accuracy? I know Im not pulling or flinching as this is not my first large caliber handgun. This was also not from resting position. Should I expect better accuracy or is this about normal.

That's the "Dirty Harry Spacial" and 900 is less than I paid for the one I had, and a lot less than what I sold it for.

This is what I did with mine about 37+ years ago, not a big one, but my first with a handgun.
