Default looking for thoughts on a special 15-3

a friend got a 15-3 about a year a go,nickel finish with a 2"barrel.the cylinder on it was recessed and i suggested to him it was a .357 instead of a .38 cylinder.the cylinder did hold .357 shells, although i don't think he ever fired any out of it. he ended up passing the gun down the road ,and saw the fellow who picked it up the other day ,and that fellow stated he called smith and Wesson and was told it shipped as is,with the .357 cylinder. he told my friend he is getting a letter to that effect. was this a mistake made at the factory?except for the cylinder ,its a regular ,2" nickel 15-3. whats the thoughts on this ?any and all comments, information welcome. before i forget it also had a target trigger and hammer on it as well.

My first thought is it's a mis-marked M19-3.
Does it have an ejector shroud under the barrel? If it is a Combat Magnum it would also have a 2 1/2" barrel.
Try to post a pic.

The SCSW makes note of a Model 15-3 with a 2.5" barrel, in 357 mag,
marked DPS_XXXX for Texas dept of public safety.
This was reported but not verified.

A few years ago I bought a nickel 2" model 15-4 on Gunbroker. It was listed by a dealer in Fla. When I received it, it was in excellent condition, not a scratch. When fired, it was something less than the accurate. One day while checking some loose ammunition in it, I accidentally dropped a .357 round into it. It seated completely. On closer inspection, it would seat in all chambers. Seems the ring inside the chambers was only carbon and the cylinder was bored straight through. I contacted SW and was told they no longer had a cylinder for it but if I could locate one and send it in w/ the gun, they would install it. I found one at GPC for $100.00 which turned out to be mint. Sent it all in to SW and they installed the replacement cylinder and set the flash gap to .002 per my request. I think they needed around another $100 to do the work and they returned the replaced cylinder. The gun is now as accurate as my other 15s. Buying it used over the NET, who's to say caused this to occur but I sure didn't want to be on record if I ever resold the gun. The revolver at issue is identical to your friend's except it did not have recessed chambers. Perhaps this will help to further complicate a strange coincidence. T44
