Default Model 10 no dash gun show find and question.

I picked up a beautiful Model 10 no dash at a gun show I was working at last weekend.

It is a blue 2" pinned barrel, square butt, with the diamond grips numbered to the gun and no turn ring.

Here is my dilemma.

According to the SCS&W the serial number C545XXX puts the date of manufacture at 1961-1962.

However, if you go into the text on the model 10 and look at the production changes it states the following:

10 (1957): Stamping of the model number.
10-1 (1959): Introduction of 4" heavy barrel.
10-2 (1961): Change extactor rod thread, right hand to left hand on the standard barrel.

Since this is a Model 10 no dash, I would think that by the engineering changes, it would put it inthe 1957 - 1958 range.

Can anybody help clear this up for me?

Thanks,

Stu

Welcome to the strange world of the 4 screw. Normal S&W rules do not apply here. I have 3 mod 10 no dashes dated by SN. to be from 1960-61 and have been puzzled about model markings and manufacturing dates. It just "Is what it is and ain't what it ain't." I don't think there is a clear reason why 4 screw guns are marked liked they are, that's why I collect them. Hmmm, I don't think this is very clear. Sorry

Hi Combat

Thanks for replying. I guess the only way to know for sure is to get a letter, but I don't know if I want to go for the $50.00.

If anybody else has some input, please reply.

Thanks,

Stu

You are confusing some things. With the model 10, and a couple other models, different "dash" numbers were made concurrently.

The way I understand model 10 production is this:

Model 10 no dash, made from '57 until sometime in '61
10-1 1959 - 1961, however, these were heavy barrel only. No dash model 10 production continued, pencil barrel only
10-2 1961-1962 (pencil barrel only)
10-3 1961-1962 (heavy barrel only)
10-4 1962 (pencil barrel only)
10-5 1962-1977 (pencil barrel only)
10-6 1962-1977 (heavy barrel only)
10-7 1977-1988 (pencil barrel only)
10-8 1977-1988 (heavy barrel only)

So you can see, the no dash and -1 were made concurrently, along with 10-2/10-3, 10-5/10-6, 10-7/10-8

Nipster

Thanks for that explaination.
It makes sense that if they were both being made at the same time it could have been in the 1961 -1962 time frame.
I learn things every day from all of you.

Thanks again,

Stu
