Default Two -2 Smiths

I'm out looking at a Model 28-2 P&R (1975) private party There is a little holster wear here and there. On right side at about 11:00 there is a rust spot but not to bad.
Then I see another one in the rack that looks a bit better, and it is supurb but it is a 29-2 P&R (mid 80's)w/ TT, TH, red ramp F sight, white outlined rear sight, hardley notice the ring on cylinder, might poss be a small blue are at tip of barrel, hard to tell. No other wear or bluing loss. Barrel is 4 1/4"
I then ask what is the asking price on the 28-2 and what about the 29-2. Hmmmm! what about if I take them both?? No origional grips for either.
Can I take them home and check them out farther, No problem
Well here they are.
Should I take them back to him or just take him the $750.00 cash he wants for both??

Let's see, $750 for both. I would go back and see if he had more, any decent Smith @$325.

I'm a .357 guy and around here the 28 with rust and rubber grips would go $400'ish, so I'd say 'heck' yes and the 29 has a RR as a bonus.

He would already have my check in hand.
Use the 28 for a carry/fun gun and take a
little better care of the 29. Good price for two
N-frames and you can get original period
grips for these on the cheap.

Hmm The 4" 29-2 for $750 is a good buy. Add another $50 for period correct grips. So he is basically giving you the 28-2! I would go back and see what other revolvers he has to give away too!

mr.jbk79 - I don't see any problem with my math - this is ALWAYS the method I use when buying Smith's

Or... I was thinking $325 for the HP and $425 for the 29 - regardless it's the deal of the day and money left over to get whatever grips you like.

29-2 ended in 1981 so unlikely the gun dates from the mid 1980s. Also, there was never a 4 1/4" barrel option. I'm sure it is 4".

Even with the aftermarket grips and the wear you describe they are easily worth the asking price.

These are wholesale prices. Full retail prices would be close to $1100.

I need to start using this method too then. Always a learning experience here, thankyou.

$750 for the pair, definite good deal. Shops in my area would be asking that for the Model 29 alone.

No offense, but the time you spent starting this thread would have been better spent paying the man and running out the door. Now go shake his hand, hand him money, and don't look back until you clear the county line, lest he change his mind.

Those are very very nice!

ROTFL. Even my wife would smack you in the head and say, "Give the man the money."

I just want to know why I can never find deals like that when I have the money.

Al---lts easy enough to find factory N grips off the net. Ebay is your best source. Most anything you is there for the bidding. Be prepared to pay the price as everybody else seems to want them too. GB has a nice selection at times and you can also find nice ones right here on the forum. l buy from all 3. l am more a Smith & Wesson box and grip collector than S&W guns.

I would borrow the money to buy those from my mother-in-law, and I'm not even married! Yes, that is a screaming deal and as several others have said already, you could easily recover most or all of your money for both by selling one (but I wouldn't let either go!) Congrats on a great pair of finds.

You might want to remove the Pachs and check for rust on the frame. It is not unusual for the rubber grips to retain moisture and initiate corrosion. Hopefully not, in this case.

I did pay him what he wanted and he threw in a box of each American Eagle 357 mag and 44 mag.
I did take them apart and cleaned and there was no rust under the grips. Now I'm on the prowl for period grips for the 29 and will work on the 28 grips later.

$750 for both! I figure you got about $500.00 to spend on grips. Good for you.
