Hello everyone,
My Dad left me three S&W revolvers. Two are model 36 and the 28-2. My daughter and I like the little 38's and shoot them quite a bit. I would like to sell the 28-2. It seems to be in excellent condition. I actually found in a sock in his bedside table . I don't think he shot it a lot. He always carried one of the 38's on him. Anyway, I was wanting to see what might be a good asking price for this.
The revolver is a 4" serial # N150178 . By looking in the forums it seems to be made around 1973.

It is in good shape.
Personally I wouldn't let it go for any less then around 500.
I'm not too up to date on HP prices though, let's wait for someone more knowledgeable to give some input.
Can you get the blast face behind the cylinder so we can see the wear for a more accurate assessment?

Welcome to the Forum.
That's a really nice Highway Patrolman. They are becoming more and more desirable. I would also say it's worth at least $500. Probably more in certain parts of the country.
I don't want to butt into your personal business, but unless you really need the money I wouldn't sell it. It was your Dad's revolver. That would mean a lot to me.

Your internet research seems to be pretty accurate about the ship date, what did that research tell you about value? You will undoubtedly see a higher value placed upon this gun if you can sell to a collector. If you sell it to a shop that has to resell it in turn, you will not realize the highest price...

Your photos are good and show all the important stuff. The model 28 was the first S&W I purchased back in 1977. In 1980 it was the standard issue of a local police department (like many others). The first female officer on that department had to qualify with that gun. She was petite, but was able to qualify. So, I can understand why you and your daughters prefer the model 36! I long ago traded my 28 for a model 19 (which I also sold long ago). You have a very nice condition model 28, it will only increase in value.

I've been looking for a 28-2 in this condition for quite some time and have come up empty handed. I even started a WTB thread here. I have found a few. I've found 3 in various local shops and one private offer. One was asking $599 and it had a lot of pitting and mild rust spots. The other was $650 and it had an officer's badge number scratched in to the side. The most recent one I found was only $425 but had been holstered a lot. Quite a bit of bluing loss. The private offer was $685. To sell it quickly, in a private sale I think you could easily get $600. I'm in Atlanta and that seems to be the going rate.

Last note. I would not sell that gun if it was my Dad's. However, if it has little sentimental value, you can sell it easily.

I have taken pics of what I hope is the blast face plate. If it's not, please don't laugh. I really don't know a lot about firearms, and if they're wrong just direct me in the right direction.

All of my info and research on this revolver has been from this site. There is a vast amount of information here and it seems everyone is so helpful. I found the date for my revolver on the Ultimate Highway patrolman thread.

As far as the selling or keeping of this revolver, I've thought about it for awhile. My Dad passed in 2008, and I've kept it in the same sock he had it in all this time. My daughter and I have discussed it and we both have memories of him with the 38's and his shotguns. In fact we had never seen this one before. So we decided to try and sell it to someone who will appreciate it and not keep it in an old sock.

That is what I was referring to, I'm not sure if I gave the correct name for it either.
It is a good indicator though that the gun wasn't shot or handled a lot.
It is in very good shape, like a other member said, unless financial reasons require you sell it this is one worth holding on to. If you are wanting to get rid of it though it will certainly bring in around an estimated 600 to the right buyer.
It is the strongest frame S&W offers in .38/.357 and is a real workhorse that is only increasing in value.
With the right care it could be handed down again one day.

Well if you are intent on selling it the good news is the Model 28 has risen in price over the past two years as buyers realized it is an N frame and the plain Jane sister to the Model 27-2 which is a much sought after revolver. I'm calling the Model 28-2 the plain Jane sister to the Model 27-2 because S&W wanted to lower the price to sell the Model 28 to police officers and police agencies. They eliminated the steel top strap checkering and high luster Blue on the Model 27 and named it the Highway Patrolman and Model 28 when model numbers came out in 1957. The 4 inch Model 28-2 is a very sought after and popular revolver. I think that one looks to be in very good condition and it looks like it wasn't shot much which also means it should be in good mechanical condition. If it had a S serial number instead of the N it would be worth $50 more to the right buyer.

Depending where you live I see that one being a $500 to $600 revolver and it should sell quickly. That's if it’s sold in a private sale and not taken to a Gun shop or Pawn shop as they will low ball the price by as much as half. Their only goal is to resell it and make a nice profit.

you, as an individual seller, maybe able to ship your revolver to the buyer's FFL (licensed dealer) along with a copy of your driver's license.
some of the OHIO folks on the forum will be able to verify this .

A four inch barrel should bring more than six inch. I could see this one easily in the $550-600 range. I see newer 28 bring in excess of $500 around here.
I paid a little less than $500 for a 28-2 with target stocks (yours are standard) and a six inch barrel about a week ago. Condition was about the same as yours.

Linda, sorry to learn of your loss. I wish to caution you of selling anything that has a family history. Once it is sold it will never come back. All that aside, your 4" 28-2 is a desirable work horse and it too can shoot the .38 Specials and +P rounds all day. Wish I had not already spent Octobers and Novembers "gun money" or I would make you an offer. I too think it should bring closer to $600. You never mentioned if you found the box, papers and cleaning kit that would have shipped with it. Do you have them? If so it will add to the value. Again, sorry for your loss. Kyle

Regardless of whether you keep it or not, get a light coat of paste wax on it and lightly hand buff it before you return it to the sock.
If you don't need the the money by all means keep it. From what I can see it is a 550 - 575 gun, just depends on who wants it.

You're getting some good advice here. One thing I will mention is you might want to check the serial number inside the stocks (That's what S&W calls the grips). If it matches the number on the butt that's a good thing. Lots of times stocks would get switched, which drives us collectors crazy. Those look like the correct Magna stocks, so hopefully the numbers match.
That's a really nice Highway Patrolman. I have two 4" M28-2s and really like them.

Price varies depending on area, I know some areas like Kaliforniastan have prices some of us eastern seaboard users wouldn't touch.
For an accurate price in your area you could try to contact a reputable gun dealer in the area (you would have to in order to ship the gun anyway) and see what they are getting top dollar for an HP like your's.
Checking with more then one store could be beneficial too, on top of the opinions of users on here.

Like others have said before, do not sell it unless it has no sentimental value. List it on this site and I doubt that it would last 4 hours, much less a full day. The M28 is a great Smith, a real workhorse. Good luck in making your decision. I am sure you will make the correct decision.

Usually the cheapest way to ship a handgun where it's legal is to ship it through a local dealer as they can ship it US Priority mail insured and when they add their charges in for handling it's usually still half of what you can ship a handgun for because you have to ship a handgun over night and that's very expensive.
