Default Storage

This topic could apply to all the forums, but I'll ask it here.
When putting your handguns away for any period of time in a gun safe, how do you prepare it?? Wrap it in a gun cloth, lay it on the shelf, in a padded bag, leave it in the box etc.
What is your way of storing it??

One thing I did was to go to the drug store and had the pharmacist save all those little moisture packets that come in pill bottles and I then put about 50 of them in a net bag and hung it in the safe as well as scattering a few throughout the safe to help absorbe any moisture. A cheap way of doing it.

I use Renaissance Wax on all my guns, and place desiccant in the safes. Put humidity gauges in your gun safes and just make sure it stays between 45%-55% humidity. You should be good to go.

Ren Wax and safe with dehumidifier - oh and in a silicon treated sock.

Lots of good ways to do it. You have to clean them and keep checking on them.

So.... I keep reading references to Ren Wax.
What happens when you shoot your guns that have Ren Wax applied?
Is it only for safe queens, or all your guns?

Thanks, Emory

When I come in I unholster, unload and wipe it down with an oily cloth. Unsually saturated with WD40 or MPRO-1. Then it goes into a sock and on the safe shelf.

Unless you're storing your guns in airtite containers , all dessicant pack do is draw in moisture from surrounding humidity. Pill bottles are relatively airtite. Those little packs absorb the moisture inside the bottle.

Mine are in silicone sprayed Sock-Ups or Bore-Stores pouches in a safe with a Golden-Rod.

Clean, lube, wax, and put into bore-store silicon treated bags. Good to go.

I use to keep all of my revolvers in silicone gun socks. As my collection continued to grow, it became difficult to store them in that manner. Couldn't find anything. Now store them in handgun racks and keep my eye on the humidity level within the safes. Never had a problem and don't expect to as long as I return them to safe in clean, lubed and waxed condition.

All my handguns are safe in their Bore Store snuggies.
I used iron-on tape to facilitate marking.
Safe has a heater running all the time.
Regularly used ones are wiped down with Corrosion-X.
Others are waxed with Renissance wax. No problem using guns with it.

I was given several dozen of the purple 'Crown Royal' drawstring bags.
I've taken some, turned them inside-out, sprayed heavily with silicone, then turned right side-out, sprayed again, allowed to dry for a short time. They make great storage sacks.
Also use them for fishing reels.

Gawd I like these threads. We haven't heard from the wonder oil folks yet, but they'll be along shortly. As always. But common sense isn't always present when gun folks talk. I've got a few nice old guns from back in the WWI days up to the present time. Some look as good as the day they were new. Back then, we didn't have all the wonderful lubes and protectants we have today. They just cleaned their guns as best they could, put some oil on them, and put them up. Up being in a closet, gun display case, or desk drawer. Didn't matter. What everyone discovered is the cleaning before storage was more important than the brand of oil used. And I'm guessing the really lucky guns were the ones that someone dumped 3 in 1 oil, or grandma's sewing machine oil on then meticulously pushed it into every nook and cranny. And I'd guess many of the old guns got put away and not looked at or even remembered for more than one 10 year period.

Guns are/were hard objects. They were made from the finest materials available at the time and covered with the best coatings.

I very foolishly bought a large tub of the wax. It was about 10 years or so ago, and at the rate I use it, it'll last forever. I have a simple rule, the was goes on the nickel guns. Blue guns will take and hold oil. I kind of like CLP Collectors, if only because it hardens to a waxy condition. I could never get oil to stick or spread out on nickel, it just beads up and rolls away.

But I also try to put the old collector grade guns in Ziplock bags. Yes, the brand is kind of important. I prefer the stout ones, and cheapo Wally World bags are way too thin for this kind of duty. Then I put the oiled, bagged gun in its box. Then I just store the boxes on top of one another, not more than 5 or 6 high. So far, so good. My postwar guns pretty much get the same treatment. Engraved guns just take a little more time with the oil. I try to get oil into each cut. Anyone who gets wax near an engraved gun is a fool.

Oil. Whatever is handy for short term. Ballistol, RIG. CLP and yes, even 3 in 1 and Marvel Mystery oil. For long term, Rusteprufe. https://prostores3.carrierzone.com/s...com/StoreFront I've used Rusteprufe for many years. Goes on very thin and watery, dries to a greasy consistency and really stays put.

Guns are then wrapped loose in plain old wax paper and dropped in thier box or a gun rug. Some are just hanging on hooks on the door. I think its better to let the gun breath a little, as long as the air passing over is not humid. If I lived in a really humid enviroment, I would do the same, but them drop them in a high quality ZipLock baggie.

I am not a fan of letting gun steel rest against any material that can absorb moisture. Wood, carpet whatever.

My safe has a Goldenrod and, I have never had a problem

Pretty much the same, but I use silicone spray. The first handgun I ever bought I stuck in a old white sock thinking "I'll get something better soon." Haven't found anything yet.

I've never had a rust problem either.

Default Frog Lub

Not wanting to hijack the thread but no one mentioned this product, I suspect its fairly recent to the retail market but there must be a few who have used this product and can offer an opinion on its effectiveness.

The blue guns I wipe down with oil and put them in a sock. Stainless guns just get wiped down. All guns are stirred in a safe with a golden rod. Where I live is not humid and has very little temperature swings so my needs are different than others.

The best method for me is to thoroughly clean the gun and wipe it dry. Apply RIG Universal Gun Grease both inside & out - even in the action by removing the side plate or detail stripping if an Auto. After re-assembly wrap the Rigged up gun in waxed paper and then in Aluminum foil. That's it - you are now good to go for many many years to come. Store the grips off the frame so they do not get saturated with the grease.

I have had 2 guns that were prepared like this stored for 25+ years. I recently took them out of storage and removed all the Rig and now I have been shooting them in my regular rotation. have never found a better method!

+1 I have several snubbie J-Frames that I store in Crown Royal bags too. Drop in/pull draw string and put in safe.I've never sprayed them.

Mike - you probably don't need to spray'em.
Explaining S&W-related OCD issues to others is very difficult.
But it puts me in my 'happy place'.

Old, clean white or gray work socks with various holes in them. I have plenty and am making more all the time. The lucky guns get a Bore Store. I do want to get some more Bore Stores but will always use socks. Safe has a rod dehumidifier in it and is in a central air-conditioned house. Previously I used the same technique in my smaller safe without the rod and had no issues with rust.

Well the Stack On safe I just got is water proof for 72 hours in 2 ft of water so they say. If I drill a hole in it for a Golden Rod then it is not waterproof anymore. I do have a 750 gram canister of silica and another 50 -75 little pillow packets of the silica absorbant laying in it. Think I got a decent deal on the safe at $1100.00 billed as a 32 gun safe

I just oil them down and leave them on the shelf. I figure any oil should last a year in someplace humid like Michigan. It should last a whole lot longer than that in Montana.

FWIW, not all those little packets you get from the pharmacist are silica gel. A good share of them any more are activated charcoal. You are much better off to buy those canisters some of the posters have mentioned and dry them out when they show pink.
