Default 28-2 S serial

I have an opportunity to purchase an 28-2 with an S serial#, dates from 1961-1962 per SCSW. 4" barrel and orgional grips no box. It would be like new but has minor holster wear at the end of the muzzle.

I would like some input about the model 28. does the S serial demand higher collector value as a 29 with S prefix or would this peice need to be in LNIB to see any value.

I have several K frame 357's and this would be my first N frame 357. I dont want to over pay for something that I may not be able to get my money back out of if I dont like it. I dont want to make any money off of it I just dont want to be stuck with it if I dont like it

What is a reasonable price to pay for it. It is from a friend and I dont want to cheat him so is the SCSW price correct?
It shows very good condition at $285 and Exc as $375 I would rate this peice as somewhere between VG & Exc.

If you can get it for ANYWHERE near those prices jump on it.
The Highway Patrolman revolvers are very hot right now.Yes, the S is slightly more desirable than the N, but both are in demand. These are great revolvers, and great shooters. I have an N and an S and like them both. In fact I just carried the N one today.
In the condition you describe it would go for at least $500 anywhere in the country. Significantly more in some areas.

I think for the S number to really effect value the gun would need to be like new but some might pay a little more for as is.
The values in the book are a few years old and they have gone up in the last couple of years. Just about all the N frames are now desired, including the HPs.
Around here I would think you are talking at least $450 to $550 all day long. Kind of hard to say without seeing the gun.
HPs are a favorite around here. Try it, I think you'll like it.

Thanks for the input you guys are the best!!!

I have seen this peice with Pachmayrs but he tells me it also comes with the original S&W holster and grips along with an extra set of grips.

I told him that I have not heard of any original holsters for the 28-2. he told me it says "SMITH AND WESSON" on the holster, any ideas?

Also since the 28-2 is an N frame did they ever come from the factory with coke grips? I know these demand higher value because I have a pre 29.

The Coke grips were for the 29s and 57s and should not have been on a HP but never say never.
S&W sold/sells holsters with the S&W logo on them. Go to their website and you can still get some.

I guess I should have said the Cokes were for the 41 and 44 magnums since they started before model numbers.

Thanks Bama,

I think I will offer him $600 based on the information I have recieved. I figure the holster and extra grip is worth $50.

For any of those prices, I'd grab it without a second thought. I paid $450 for mine, and have been looking at two more, both N serial numbered, that are priced at $585 and $600. HPs are very popular, and great shooters. Grab it, you won't be sorry.
