I like nice stocks; I have several from Keith Brown, Kurac, Collinscraft and Herrett's, among others. But I always went with rubber or factory for my serious guns. Now that my duty days entail taking out the garbage and picking up the kids from school, my packing guns don't see much wear. So it was time to put something nice on them...a reward for years of taking care of me. Here's three of my 3 inchers that are wearing something a little better than what they had on "back in the day". I'll be posting more as my other revolvers get new stocks.

Im kinda up in the air on "nice grips" for duty guns, even civilian concealed-carry duty. If I ever have to draw a gun in anger, I'd hate to fumble it due to a shiney but slippery finish on a set of fancy grips. I have a couple nice Badger boot grips for my SB & RB Chiefs which I really like, but the rubber boots I have for the RB's seem like they provide a firmer grip. I go back & forth between the badgers & the goodyears for everyday carry, depending on my frame of mind that day.

They do look nice.

All my are carry guns so they go functional vs looks. Love the firm grip of the rubber on my model 13.

I too used various rubber grips while on the job, they don't get cold or slippery. But I definately see your point and revolvers always look better with nice wood. I usually reserve the nice wood stocks for range guns that won't be abused, and ofcourse for display they can't be beat. Here are 3 of mine.

Really pretty. I am a sucker for nice wood grips on any gun especially a blued gun. Just something about the blue gun and wood.

Hate rubber. I want checkered wood. Smooth wood looks nice but I want checkering. I want something I can grab and won't slip because my hand is wet.

My carry revolvers wear rubber, but I do have nice wood for them for barbque's

I don't have a revolver for EDC but all mine wear wood.

My take. Tyler "T" grips make beautiful guns and grips look ugly.

All my CC I, J & K frame have Goodyears.
For the big ones for hunting & go to meetings, wood looks better.......

My carry guns wear rubber. Where I live it's hot! The nicest wood panels will turn to mush, inside of course, the outside stays okay.
I love beautiful wood. It just isn't practical for everyday wear unless you sit behind a desk, no disrespect intended. Wood goes away, rubber is forever.
I have wood on everything else though. I have several older revolvers that the numbers match, the inside panel always looks alot different than the outside, darker, stained, grain opened up.
I save the wood for resale, if ever and only on carry guns. Otherwise it's wood forever.

BTW "back in the day" the Tyler grips were the Cats' meow. This was before synthetic grips were widely available. It was the only way to enhance a grip without major money for custom wood. I can't tell you many guns I saw wearing them. I like the look, "Classic".

In some ways I agree but again there is a certain beauty in ergonomics and functionality. Thats why there is such a variety; everybody can find something that suits them. The T-Grip is a very functiional accessory; the Stags on my Speed Six are because I like them and the Tyler is on it because it it works. This is a working gun and it gets carried where it is legal to do so. The combination works for me

If you want real nice wood grips with checkering I would look at a set of spegel's.

I've reduced it to two types of grips for my carry guns. First, Spegel Extended and Checkered Boot Grips in either Cocobolo or Makassar Ebony:




Or Nill Classic grips for my hunting guns:

In the long haul I settled on smooth Spegels; still my preference. My favorites, though, were smooth ivories on a LW Commander. (I have fond memories of that gun; still have the stocks though.)

Got a box full of Goodyear takeoffs. I can abide Hogue monogrips (nylon) for the feel but wouldn't want to be seen in public with them.

How about some Sile grips on this nickel plated baby? Classy!!

I made this pair from scratch back in '67. Destroyed a pair of PC magnas to do it. Who knew?

Bill Jordan shot the gun one Sat morning and said "By Golly those are alright." He had huge hands, and they were too small for him, but they worked good for me.

I did a lot of practicing and managed to get along OK. Never did like the looks of or try rubber ones.

In recent years, I've wound up with some guns with rubber grips, but I just can't warm up to them.

I trade them off pretty quick.

Just joined up, figure I should start posting somewhere. My new to me 29-2, with a set of factory finger grooves. Not anything too special compared to some that have posted here, but they fit me well. I'd like to try making myself a set of magna-style stocks, haven't decided what wood to use.



In case anyone is wondering, its in the middle of a nose job (hence the missing sight). Started as an 8 3/8", I'm just hunting up a factory type piece to install.

Nothing, looks great, just not very comfortable for a sizable population of shooters.

Early pre heat treated, shortened and finely tuned 4TH change. The K targets were modified and suit the gun well along with a Bucheimer quick release holster.






This pre 27 is a favorite shooter along with a set of Cokes I rescued from near death.

There's an older lady that sells grips at several large gunshows including Tulsa. I like tha I can pick the wood and the grain. This first revolver has Hogues that fit my big hands well. My model 65


This model 63 has Badger grips.

You know I'm not giving this up.

Besides the above .38 this is my main squeeze.

As for the Herrett's I'll need to tune them to my hand before they'll work for me. All I need to do is find the time.

I always liked nice grips on my guns, but I do like to have them feel as nice as they look. Ahrends to me are pretty cost effective as they look great but they cost what Hogue wood grips cost. They also fit my hand very well. I have a thing for Grashorn's elk stag grips too.

The grips on the 27 are cordia from Ahrends with five coats of Tru-oil, on the 649 are Bubinga, also from Ahrends and have four coats of Tru0oil. I added a fifth since this picture.

I had a set of Ahrend j-frame boots I bought off this site, they were too slim for my tastes. Great for pocket carry, but for filling the hand not so much. Sold them off.
I like the looks & feel of wood grips, but for me uncle mike boots are hard to beat for my j-frames. I'd like to try a nice set of Spegel boots in cocobolo or simlar wood, but don't like the high prices from Novak & Lightning nor the wait time to get them from Spegel himself.

One of my favorite carry guns, a 66-no dash with Patrick's custom grips. Just feels sweet in my hand.

The first time I shot my 625, I knew it was a keeper; it's very accurate, and has a great trigger. With that in mind, I called Roy Fishpaw to inquire about getting some nice custom grips made. We agreed on a concept and a price.

He put me on his waiting list, and wrote to me almost a year later, in the early summer of 2001, to tell me he was ready to make my grips. Instead of shipping the 625 to him, I delivered it in person to his home in southern Virginia. (I made a mini-vacation out of it, riding my motorcycle down Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway.)

Mr. Fishpaw measured and traced my right hand, and I selected the wood for my grips from his stock. He also gave me a tour of his workshop, and showed me his scrapbook of photos of public figures and celebrities for whom he's made grips over the years. I spent more than an hour in his company, and enjoyed every moment: he is a true gentleman, and a genuine nice guy!

Five months later, my 625 arrived...
