Smile Ultimate Pinto thread

Well, I searched for a Pinto thread and did not find one. I've yet to see on in person and hope to own one someday. Must say I've seen some real beauties on here from time to time.

Were there any factory Pinto 27's?

Until then, why not get something started here to wet my appetite? Picture required and some history would be appreciated.

Updated title...

Here are the two I have. Both 19-3's, 4" and 2.5" and have letters on both.

Not a true Pinto in the usual sense, but it's one of my favorites... and the only two tone revolver that I have.

Model 29-2 with two-tone finish and shipped in 1972. Model 29 with two-tone finish and Class A-engraved by Russ Smith in 1959. ".357" Magnum with two-tone finish shipped in 1952 (early target stocks and shipped in a pre-war ".357" Magnum box numbered to the gun).

No offense, but I don't get the appeal of a "pinto" revolver -- it just doesn't do anything for me. I kinda like the look of a 1911 with a blued slide on a dull nickel frame, but a revolver.... no thanks. All-blue or all-silver for me.
I'd never even seen a pinto revolver until I started surfing the handgun websites fairly recently. When you refer to "my two factory-lettered 3.5" pre-27 pintos", do you mean that they came from the factory as pintos?

Yes, they did, and I'm sure Doc44's came from the factory that way too, as opposed to someone taking them apart and making them into two tone guns at some later date.

hotrod150, no offense taken. Some have called them nothing more than "parts revolvers". If the gun is lettered from S&W it means that they came from the factory as a two tone revolver and were not taken apart and put back together by someone outside the factory. I like them, would like to have more of them, but finding them and having the funds to acquire them are two entirely different subjects. If everyone like the same thing, there would be only one S&W model.

Jeremy Skipper used to have the market cornered on Pinto's but he may have used them to fund another project.

OH, I knew I was going to like the idea of this thread. Doc's are always staggeringly beautiful. And 230's pre-27's are very sharp. Interesting to see so many of the factory models also had the RR, even early on. Guess if you were going premium - go all out.

Thanks for sharing and hopefully there are more to come.

Has anyone sent a revolver back to S&W to have it refinished as a pinto?
Or would they even do that?

Here are both of my Two-Tones. The upper one is a Pre 24 4" and the lower is a Pre 27 3 1/2" . Both are lettered. Now if I could just take better pictures.

Are both versions called "pinto" or is one a "reverse pinto"???

And a member a while back sent a 586 in for a pinto finish so yes the factory will refinish them like that.

Maxbob, I was told that the 2.5" M19-3 I have is a "true Pinto" and that the 4" M19-3 is a "reverse Pinto".

I decided to "release" those two guns recently to a good friend of mine and he is a member of this Forum. For him, acquiring those two engraved pintos added to an already incredible collection of Smith & Wessons that he has.

He may opt to post them in this thread before long and I hope he does.

Several years ago I sent two mint 19-4 2.5 inch guns (one blue, one nickel) back to the factory and had them swap barrels, barrel pins, cylinders, cylinder releases and side plate screws. It was inexpensive. No they didn't ship that way, but they were "sort of" factory pintos. I kept them for a while and then sold them to a forum member.

Default 27-2 6 1/2"

Not the textbook definition of a "pinto" but an interesting gun--it letters with the nickel cylinder and target stocks. Another forum member has a .44 Spl. example.

Does anyone ever refer to these beautiful pistols as "piebald" and "skewbald". The way we do horses?

This is a factory pair of pre-27's, by Harry Jarvis. The grips are original to the guns,
although I'm not sure who carved the grips. They do letter to the guns. Serial numbers
are S90XXX.

Perhaps Tom H will remember these guns.

Regards, Mike Priwer

Mike, yes I certainly do. Those are two very special engraved two tone 357 magnums, right up to the very rare Blanchard Red Ramp sights. Thanks for posting them.

I'm more of a shooter then a collector so the only pinto I have encountered was almost too pretty which is okay because I couldn't afford it.
I really do love the look and hopefully will claim mine one day.

I like Pinto's so wanted to add mine.
I haven't seen any others out of a 25-2.
Where they dug the stocks up for it is a mystery I'd like to know

He may opt to post them in this thread before long and I hope he does.

Tom released these beauties to me - for which I will be forever grateful. I just rediscovered this thread and will send it to the top with these guns...

Do "pintos" have to be nickel and blue to be legit?

Just curious as I personally don't get what the appeal of these two tone guns might be. In fact I'm having a custom built now that is a blue frame with a stainless cylinder and barrel. I'm going to some expense to have the whole thing done in a black nitride finish to hide the two tone materials.

To those who like them, more power to you. Just not my idea of appealing or attractive.

Dave

Jim
I have something similar here. The grips are "pinto" also.
