1968 Model 10-5
I called customer service today to get the date off of my S&W .38 special snub nose. I gave hime the SN and he told me it was a 1968. The first letter in the SN is D331. I was also told that it was 1968 when they first started marking it with a D and since it is only 331 does that mean that it was the 331st to be made and if so does that add any value and what would the value be of my gun. Thanks in advance for any information

Morgan, welcome to the forum.
I also picked up a 1968 Model 10-5 a few months ago...three inch barrel! Mine is D68xx. So, we know they made at least 6,800 of them that year!
Mine was a police turn-in from Victory Australia that I got for $299.
I would guess the low serial number would have no bearing on price if you decide to sell yours.
But, stick around for the experts to get here with their opinions.
Again, welcome.

morgan916, first off welcome and I hope you enjoy the site as much as I do.
I do not believe the low "D" serial number adds any value. However, it being a snub nose adds value over the other barrel lengths. I hesitate to place a monetary value on it because the condition of the gun means everything when it comes to price. Also, if you have the box and accessories with the gun, that will add some value. If you post some pics, there are many on here that can and will give you their opinions on the value.
Again, welcome to the site.

If I am not mistaken, all fixed sighted K-frames shared the same serial number block so 10's, 12's, 13's etc. could have had a D number. SO D331 could have been the 331st fix sight K-frame of that SN series, but it could possibly have been the 1st Model 10 in the series (it would take way more research than it is worth to find out).
