Default nickel plated 28-2's

Just opinions--how much should we trust the "nickel" 28-2's? I know they produced a minimum amount of these finishes on the 28, so is obtaining the serial #'s on those and comparing the only sure fire way to be sure?

If it's a gun without a letter, I would just assume it was refinished and price accordingly.

A few 5" guns made for the FL Highway Patrol, a very few others verified from the factory, and the vast majority refinished blue guns as arjay noted.

Approximately fifty-five Model 28-2s with a 4-inch barrel and brushed nickel finish were shipped to approximately fifteen distributors in July 1972. Approximately twenty-five Model 28s with a 5-inch barrel and (bright) nickel finish were made for the FHP and shipped in 1959.

I would only buy one of these guns for a premium price if it was accompanied by a verifying factory letter, or with the understanding that the gun would letter.

You see quite a few Model 28-2s with a 4- or 6-inch barrel that have been refinished in nickel outside of S&W because the company did not offer a change of finish on this model.

So few of them were made that for all intents and purposes they do not exist.

Think of it this way: the legitimate ones are all already owned by collectors or people who arent giving them up. If you come across one, there is a 99% chance it's a fake (refinish). If you want one of those, I guess that's ok, but just go into the transaction for what it is, not what it's not.
