Fails on Double Action
What would make a Mod 14-4 fail to engage and cock the hammer on double action? It seemed to be OK until after I shot 20-30 rounds single action. Then when I tried double action it seemed to start to engage the hammer and then kick out. Pretty consistently doing that now. Only occasionally will it cock the hammer. Gun appears to be in like new condition. I just cleaned and oiled it and took it to the range.

Hey the trigger spring maybe having some problems and there might be an issue with the cylinder latch, hammer block or rebound slide and spring. I would suggest if you are comfortable watch a few video's on you tube and take apart the revolver. Or take it to a gunsmith....

Might just need a good detail cleaning. Can't really tell anything until you get under the side plate. Maybe a damaged/worn double action sear?

Is the cylinder rotating? If so what you have is a failure to reset. Causes for that can be "short stroking" the trigger, a rebound spring that is a bit too weak, a binding rebound slide, a mashed up or broken DA Sear Spring, or a brand new DA sear that hasn't been properly chamfered.

My "Smith" called me last night to say the problem was a small spring that had somehow gotten bent almost in half. Don't remember much of how he described it, but he replaced it and it now functions perfectly. He said the gun was as close to pristine inside as he could imagine one to be. Had no idea how this spring got bent. I had to "convince" him to take at least $25 for his service. Good friends with skills are a treasure!
So, my $375 pawn shop purchase in almost perfect external condition...maybe 97%, has turned out to be quite a bargain. And I was just looking for a shooter.
