Nickel highway patrolman
Hey yinz, I'm new here and what drew me in was looking for info on a nickle 28-2 highway patrolman. I was gifted one by my father in-law. Seems its possible to be worth a few bucks. The finish does show signs of it being a carried piece. Looking at it I would have to say its not a fake. But I'm not a expert. Can anybody help me identify? What is value? I have been shooting with it. Might want to put it on a shelf?

Welcome to the Forum!
Factory nickel M28s are pretty rare, but we need pictures to see what you have. Post some up, and if you can, take off the grips and get photos of the markings on both sides of the grip frame. Should be a big ol' "N" there, and the hammer and trigger should be case colored blue. If either of these things is off it is probably aftermarket nickel.
As far as shooting it, go ahead, shoot all you want. Just don't abuse it, keep it out of a holster, and you should be able to enjoy shooting it and keep it looking just as good as it does now for the rest of your life. Those guns were made for shootin'!
Welcome to the best gun forum on the 'net!

I removed the grips, and on the bottom it says "N1748xx". Trying to post pics.

It's very unlikely it's original factory finish as there were 30 known to exist. 25 were made for the Florida Highway Patrol and are marked as such. The other 5 were salesman samples.
Pictures and serial number would be necessary.
Jim
Edit "N1748xx" would be in the wrong serial number range so it's been refinished.

Remove them again and look at the face of the frame....inside where the grip would sit against the frame. If it is an original Nickel gun the will be simply a capital "N" in there. Lft side.
The N in the serial number you are mentioning means it is a later than 1968 gun and not original Nickel. I don't have my book in front of me to date it.

The number on bottom of your grip frame is the serial
number. Very unlikely it is a factory nickel HP.
Shoot it and enjoy it.

Other than the serial number is there a seperate N stamped on to the frame and maybe one on the back of the cylinder by the extractor star? These are the stamps that are usually on factory nickel S&W revolvers.
A nickel Model 28-2 is a rare bird with probably less then 50 to ever made on two contracts. There's always the possibilty of a special order but many say that S&W didn't offer it as a special order.
So if you feel lucky and think you won the S&W lottery spend $50 to get it lettered from the factory

Damn, thought I hit the lotto. Oh well. I love this thing, it shoots great! Very reliable and accurate! However it did come from Florida!

I will have the factory verify what it is. Either way the $50 is worth my piece of mind!

The nickeled ones from Florida were in the S prefix range from 1959 and are stamped FHP on them. Yours is 14 years too late.

It's not worth the $50. If there is no N stamp on the cylinder or the frame on the butt, it's not factory nickel.
Is there an H stamp on the cylinder face above the ejector star?
If so, it's definetly not a factory nickel

Congratulations on your 28! Regardless of the original finish, they are great guns, some of the best S&W ever made. Shoot and enjoy it. Your father in law obviously is a man of taste, and he probably likes you OK as well. As a matter of fact, if he's looking for another son-in-law.... ......Oh, and Welcome to the Forum!

If there is no N on it, it is NOT an original nickel gun, and the date also tells me no. If it was special order it would still have the N stamped into grip frame on left.

Does it look like this?
If so, then it's not Org. , and this one was done while it was fairly new.
Note the hammer & trigger are not nickel plated.

I don't know where this salesman sample nickeled 28s ever got started, but to our knowledge they don't exist.
What is known is there were 25 bright nickel 5" for the FHP in 1959 and 54 4" brushed nickel ones sent out to 15 distributors in July of 1972.
The OPs serial number is not one of either of them.

Then you definitely know it's an aftermarket re-finish. Save your 50 bucks.
BTW, to all the other posters, as far as we know the known nickel 28s did not have the "N" stamp in the usual places.

It's in the Standard Catalog of S&W, 3rd edition, page 196, under variations.

Yes and the SCofSW has many mistakes and as far as I'm concerned this is probably one of them.
The 54 brushed nickel 28s they refer to were definitely sent out to 15 distributors, not salesmen, in July 1972.

Here's something you can take to the bank. If it's got a brass, gold, or anything other than a case hardened colored hammer and trigger, it's a refinish.
Disclaimer: unless it's a stainless gun with a stainless trigger, or one of the model 36-10 with factory gold colored hammer, trigger and cylinder release latch made for Talo Distributing in 2002...

Oh, also, there is some guy in Pembroke Pines FL selling what looks like a 5 screw 4" pre-28 that obviously was re-nickeled for $300. If it wasnt a 8 hour round trip drive, I would go buy it probably.
Anyone in FL interested, it's on FGT...

I wouldn't do it either, it's a $300 shooter, and I live closer.

$300 isnt bad for an N frame shooter. At least around here. Maybe Orlando pricing is better? $300 around here buys you a ratty model 10. It's a shame people do this to nice 5 screws though...
There's a guy in a store near me with a nice, 98-99% 4" 5 screw pre-28 he wants $1300 for it. I dont know how he came apon that pricing. Gun only. He also was selling a mini-14 for $1500 last Friday, so he's one of "those" gun stores

Are you sure it is even nickel?
I have a hard chromed 28-2 4" barrel which was carried
by a friend when he worked for the Fort Lauderdale PD.
When I first saw it, I thought it was stainless steel.
I showed it to a forum member, and he told me it was
hard chromed. Either way is an excellent shooter.

Stu, you are probably right, most aftermarket were hard chrome and not nickel. If we had a picture we could tell from the color tone.
