Default S&W Model 60

Merry Christmas everyone.

Today I won a Model 60 on the GunBoker for $355.00 + $36.00 shipping.

SMITH & WESSON NO DASH MODEL 60 SPL 38 SPECIAL : Revolvers at GunBroker.com

I have two questions today ?

1.# It has a pinned barrel and I am wondering what year was the last year of the pinned barrels on theses revolvers ?

2.# Also what does the term "No Dash" mean ?
Thanks

Pinned barrels were deleted in 1982. "No-Dash" is the original Model 60 before any design changes were made. Usually a new "dash" (like Model 60-4) was used whenever the basic configuration was changed. For instance, the 60-4 has a 3" barrel and adjustable sights.

"no-dash" 60s went for a long time, even past the 1982 "pinned barrel" cutoff. the first few "dashes" were for models that ran concurrently with the "no-dashes" (3" barrels, adj sights, special runs, etc), as opposed to a clean end of the "no-dash" and a beginning of the "dash-1", etc. does that make any sense?!

Just to reiterate, S&W noted major changes in their models with a "dash number." While most of us consider the deletion of the pin to secure the barrel a big deal major change, apparently on the Model 60 at least, S&W did not. I think a whole lot of the importance Smith placed on a change had to do with how much it changed the making of the parts that went into the gun and how much it changed the operation of the production line. I guess pinning the barrel wasn't that big a deal to them!

Judging from the photos, you got a good deal on that one.

I think it'll do well by you, if your skills are equal to shooting a snub .38 accurately.

Surely, you realize that the grips aren't original, but if your hand doesn't like them, they're easily replaced.

"I guess pinning the barrel wasn't that big a deal to them!"

Maybe they didn't want the change to be noticed!
S&W has been inconsistent with model and dash changes over the decades. When the M15 was modified to fire magnums, the model number was changed to M19. When the M60 was modified in the same way in the late 1990's, the model number stayed the same, only the dash number changed to dash 9 and 10.

Best and Happy Boxing Day,
Rick

The model 15's were not modified to fire magnums, it's a different gun,

For whatever reasons, the J frames, when things like the pinned barrel or extra screws was removed, they did not mark this with a dash, like they did everything else for the most part.

Model 36, 37, 38, 60 were all like this. Probably the model 63 and others too. They made the no dash 36, 37 and 60 for almost 30 years, including several years after they deleted the pinned barrels.

Model 67-1 and 15-4, 10-7 and 10-8 also had quite a run of a few years after they deleted the pinned barrel

The concurrent dash numbers are interesting, and confusing to some people.
On many of the fixed sight guns, like the Model 10, there were almost always concurrent dash numbers that indicated the type of barrel that was installed (tapered or heavy). This did not seem to happen on the target sight models.
And some models show a dash change when the pinned barrel went away, but most did not.
I'm sure S&W had reasons for this, but I don't know that anyone really knows what they were.

Correct! Both appeared about the same time - early 1950s - before Model numbers were used.
