Default Grip question on model 29 - 2

I recently bought a model 29 - 2, and it really is in pristine condition...in fact, it appears to never have been fired. The old gentleman who sold it couldn't remember if he had ever fired it or not...and if he did, it wasn't often! Anyway, to my question: I do want to fire it. It has the lovely magna grips, which are quite large in my hands. I was wondering if anyone had ever put a different set of grips on a 29 - 2, just for range use. Of course, I would keep the original magna grips!

Any comments or recommendations on grips?

Default 29-2

i think you must be talking about the target grips as they are large, the magnas are not. i have several 29s and always change the grips to the magnas with a tyler's grip adaptor.

Smile magna +tyler

RG, I don't know why I never consisered that idea of a magna grip with a tyler. The targets on my N frames are just a little too big and the magnas are not quite big enough. Just like goldielocks said. I'm going to give your idea a try. I had considered shaving the targets stocks down and I've tried a number of aftermarket grips but none that I liked.

On the N frame the magnas are just to small for me so I have target grips on all of them and all but the model 28-2's came with them.

I don't know that much about the grips...all I do know is they are beautiful but HUGE.

I found this thread after a little searching (search is your friend ) :

Why did S&W even bother with Magna Grips for N-Frames?

The Hogue Monogrip (rubber or wood) is smaller than the factory target stocks, but it leaves the back strap uncovered which can make shooting full-power loads uncomfortable. The Pachmayr Decelerator covers the back strap but is pretty big. Best to try several types at your local shop before buying.

Here is some grip info for you
These are S&W target grips on a Model 29-2

These are S&W Magnas on a 28-2

These are a set of Ahrends Tactical on a 686 but they make them for N frames as well and they are much thinner the S&W targets

I will get a set of Hogue grips for the range...but I'd also like to get some S&W Magna grips for my 29 - 2. Is there somewhere to buy them, or just look for them on eBay, Gunbroker, the classifieds here, etc?

You can post a want to buy (WTB) in the forum classified or do a saved search on Ebay for N frame magna grips and they will email you every day showing whats new for the search.

Thanks!

Actually, there is a set listed now in the classifieds here, that I am considering.

Also, S&W has the large walnut presentation case for $65 (approx) on their website...not the original, of course. The ones I've seen on eBay were all over $100, and not in new condition. I saw one in the gun shop yesterday for $125...so, the one on S&W seems like a pretty good deal. I haven't made up my mind about that...I wouldn't really use it for anything...only if I ever decided to sell the gun, and then I don't know if it would add any value, since it isn't the original box.

Ken, I happen to have an original set of I believe you call them target grips for a model 29 for sale and an original mahogany presentation box for a 29 for sale as well.

I just put Pachmyr rubber grips on my Model 29 for shooting only. They are comfortable and inexpensive. I took the Coke's and the nice targets I have and put them away. The only suggestion I have if you go with "goodyears" like Pachmayr or Hogue... if you are going to store for any length of time remove them as they allow moisture to collect under them.

If Magna's are still what you think you'll choose, consider the Mod 58 type (as seen in Saxon Pigs post you accessed earlier) which have a rounded area below the checkering. The typical N frame magna's (Mod 28's) have a sharper base and aren't quit as comfortable to carry concealed or otherwise, IMO...

Just a thought...

Default N Frame Stocks for M29-2

GKC, carelesslove, here !

If you are looking for a pair of larger-than-magnas, but smaller-than- targets, I have a beautiful pair of smooth Fuzzy Farrant's with finger grooves - that do not require the frame to be notched.

They are slim, with palm swells and are well over 30 years old, but are brand new.

Let me know if these interest you. I have pictures of the inside and outside.

Price: $125 + insured shipping by FedEx.

Thanks, carelesslove

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that if it's got Pach's on it, it has probably been shot more than a time or 2.

Default Interchanging grips

I want to put larger grips on my 28-2. Will the 29-2 grips and model 27 grips interchange? If not then what will? Or all of the above..

Default Keeping it stock in looks

I guess I am trying to maintain the stock look, but going larger. My dad had the same gun I just got today and he had what he called "sport grips" on his. His was nickel plated with the large grips and it looked mean. I finally found the same gun he had, but I need the large stock grips. Take it, that this was over 30 years ago and it was a chore finding and getting the gun..

The grips on the 29-2 in this thread really looked like what he had, they could have even been the 27 model large grips that he put on his. I am assuming as a beginner gun collector here that this is N frame will interchange with the 27 and 29...
