Default 10 to 19

I am thinking about getting a K frame (or two) from the models 10 to 19.
These 4 are available in my local area. I had watched 19's in the past but after talking to a local 'smith I am broadening my view a bit.

I assume the 10's and 19's are the most common and this is a regional question but which of these 4 (and all 10 too) would you grab first as you see them the least often?

The 10's are wonderful guns. I've never owned a 19, but the finest revolver bar none that I've ever had was a Model 15 with a pinned, tapered four-inch barrel. I really don't think you can go wrong with any K-frame.

Let's see:

10 Military and Police
11 Military and Police
12 Military and Police Airweight
13 Military and Police .357 Magnum
14 K38
15 K38 Combat Masterpiece
16 K32
17 K22
18 K22 Combat Masterpiece
19 .357 Combat Magnum

That would indeed make a nice collection!

I suspect you will have the most trouble finding the Models 11 and 16.

Four from 10 to 19? Ok,I'm a rimfire guy,but I'd go 17,19,15,10.My 19 only sees 38s,but I just like the looks of it over a 15,and 10.
If I could only have one though,it would be the 18.

My picks for the list are a 4 inch model 10, Model 15 with 4 inch barrel, Model 18 with 4 inch barrel, and a Model 17 with 6 inch barrel and all with pinned barrels. If you want only one 22LR I would keep the Model 18 and get a Model 14 with 6 inch pinned barrel. If you have to have a 357 magnum I'd drop the Model 14 and get a Model 66.

I'm 69 and I don't find 357 magnum K frames much fun anymore so I have a Model 686 with 6 inch barrel and a Model 28-2 with 4 inch barrel.

How about N-frames? I have a 19-4 and a 10-5 though! Both excellent shooters. The 10-5 has the smoothest dbl. action trigger pull of any S&W I've ever handled.

7 out of 10 for me. I have models 10,13,14,15,17,18 & 19. I don't like airweights for shooting and cant see the point of .38 S&W in a K-frame (model 11), but I would love to find a 16 to finish the K-frame collection!

A model marked Model 11 is a tough one to find. Also true for the 16.

I had to settle for Pre-Models to round out my line up.

Although my most used revolver is a 3" Model 65 due to stainless construction, rugged fixed sights an 3" barrel, the guns I bring out of the safe when I want to 'Wow' people at the range are the 4" Model 18 .22 and the 4" Model 19 .357

Both are beautiful blue, balance perfectly, and are amazingly accurate. Both are a true joy to shoot. Revolvers are like old watches. Mechanical works of art from another time.

Friends that I have allowed to shoot these guns compare them to driving classic cars - an experience.

The Model 19 was the first handgun I ever fired at 17. A year later, my parents gave me a 19-3 in 1985. I agree - it would be 'The police officers perfect revolver.'

S&W Model 19 ? The Police Officers Perfect Revolver | The Firearm Blog

The Model 18 handles just like the Model 19, but has almost zero recoil. Its also super accurate. Its so much fun that once started plinking at various objects - its almost impossible to put down. My wife and children learned to shoot handguns with this Model 18 as well as a Browning Buckmark .22 auto.

I would buy these two first.

If you find a 16 at a bad price that you can afford, get it! You also need a 53 in a K frame collection.

If your neck o' the woods is anything like here, Model 19s have been scarce since the early 70's. The Model 10 is probably the first used revolver you will come across so grab one when you see them. Don't forget the Model 13, a Model 10 with a magnum cylinder, or the Model 64, a Model 10 all dressed in shiny clothes (well, stainless). I am lucky that I have a Model 66 which combines all the features of most of the Model 10 variants.

Don't rule out the model 48. .22 magnums are a fun round to shoot with just enough bark and flash to remind you that it's a real gun.

Default one gone

Of the 4 I listed as available locally, the Model 17 is already gone.

I have a J, 642-CT and a N, a 29 Mountain gun and a Blackhawk in .357.

I have 4 or 5 S&W's total and had bought a Python a while back thinking it would be 'in the middle' and not another S&W but it is much bigger than I expected, no way my wife or 11 year old could shoot it, and talking to my gunsmith he recommended looking at K frames.

I am leaning to older versions and like the look of the square butts but am going to keep my eyes and options open and see what comes up.

Yes, early stainless is an option and I will add 48, 53, 64 and 65 to my list.

Thanks for the info so far,
Bill

So how are the K frame .357's as shooters? Do they hold up?
I have read that a 19 is like a K+ frame and there was a pretty nasty editorial about S&W on the Chuck Hawks pages but it was old (2007?) and may of reflected politics at the time.

Would the above quote imply a 13 is a delicate .357?

I am considering all the K frames but I do want at least one 357 shooter.

Thanks,
Bill
