Default Model 58 questions

I was at the local gun store today and saw that they had a model 58 in the used section. The blueing was in good condition (~95%), faint turn ring, tight lock up, "S" serial number prefix and didnt look like it was shot a whole bunch.

that was the good, now the bad and something I haven't seen before.

The grips aren't original, and on the crane opposite of where "mod 58" is stamped there were another set of numbers and some other markings that I couldnt make out.

Price was $760 but I know I can get at least 50 bucks off.

my questions are how much is an original set grips, what are these unknown markings/numbers and whats a good price.

Thanks gents.

S&W often stamped the yoke/frame with assembly numbers to aid in keeping the parts together.

Original Modified Magnas for a pre-1968 M58 will be difficult to find and pricey. I would demand $150 off the price due to their absence.

A 95% gun is not collector grade and the incorrect stocks is a bummer. To me, this is a $600 gun but no doubt others will chime in saying my estimate is far too low.

SP is correct on the value, I think. You could go a little higher but to me you're not describing a $760 (or $710) model 58.

This especially so given that an S-frame gun will require DIAMOND Modified Magnas. These are upwards of $200 a pair for very-good-to-excellent examples when found...

This is why I ask you guys. Always honest and keeping from spending too much money, which I really appreciate as I tend to be kind of impulsive.

Guess ill just wait for the next one to come along

Original Magnas are nice to have , but if yer gonna shoot that .41 M&P with anything more powerful than blanks , yer gonna wanna change the grips.

Shooting full-power loads with Magnas is an exercise in sado-masochism!

Another thing to consider, younggun22 is you will probably never find the grips that were numbered to your gun. And finding period/model correct grips is one thing, but finding ones that fit well is another. Magnas were hand fitted to each frame, and in the day there were differences in those frames. Sooo, it's a **** shoot when it comes to finding the best wood for your gun. If you can have the gun and wood together before you buy you will be miles ahead. Otherwise, take your chances. You will probably find what you are looking for, but be ready for some level of disappointment along the way. BTW, what grips are on the gun now?

Oh yea. If you look at the "what gun do you regret selling" thread, mine was a 58 I bought in the early 70's from a buddy who had just sold his gun shop and the 58 was a personal piece that was like new. That should have been a keeper. I knew not.

Sorry to resurrect this thread from the dead but I passed on the first 58 that we were discussing and have just picked up a very nice 58 with number matching correct grips!

Cannot wait to shoot it. I have officially joined the 58 club!

Pictures will follow.

I picked up a few s&w's at the shop I work at this week and I took them home but me and the boss haven't discussed price. I think it will be quite less than 760

I have looked but cannot find the original grips from my M58. They were horrible, and while I would not expect I would have done this, I wonder if I pitched them.

My 58 came without the correct grips but as a shooter nothing can beat the Monogrip brand of hard plastic grips. It shoots to poi with 210gr bullet and h110. It rocks the swinging targets and has made my 20+ year search well worth while!! I wish I never got rid of my M57 deer hunting 6" model but I have so much brass and bullets left that this is pure pleasure with every outing! jb

I'm in the market for a 58, not having much luck. Shooter - grade would be fine.
Any leads, I'd appreciate.
