5" pencil barrel Model 10 - Value question
For some reason I've got a bug to get one of these, but every one I've seen seems to be in the mid $400 and above. So what would be a fair price for one in good to very good condition? This will be a shooter, not a safe queen.
Thx

Well with the gun buying frenzy going on it's probably worth more now but last year they were a $350 to $375 rebvolver in very good condition as there are tons of them out there.
A super clean 4 inch which I prefer for $375

Mickey D and fyimo, thanks for the input. Beautiful pieces, both.
Does anyone know if the 5" tapered barrel ever came in a round butt configuration? I know the 4" did, though it doesn't seem in great numbers.

Speaking of the gun buying frenzy. Monday I go into the LGS. The shelves are bare. I'm talking to the owner and he shows me a 10-5 he had just brought into the store. A very nice clean gun. Great lock up and timing. One flaw. The owner had sawed the barrel off just in front of the ejector rod. I aksed the dealer about it and he said he was going to fix it prior to selling. Yesterday I got to thinking about it and called the store to tell him I wanted it. You know the story. Too late. Even guns with sawed off barrels are getting tough to get. Things are bad.

If you can find a "pencil barrel Model 10" at any price grab it as it is the most rare of S&Ws. Standard barrel S&Ws and taper barrel S&Ws are all over the place, but a pencil barrel model would be a fabulous find.

My wife made an even-up trade of her model 10-15 heavy barrel 4 inch for this near mint 10-6 5 inch last spring. Shoots as good as it looks. I added the target stocks.

The rare pencil barrel model shoots #2 lead.

Are you sure this is a 10-6 and not a 10-5? The barrel looks tapered to me and the 10-6, by definition, has a heavy barrel.

The frame is marked 10-6.
I'm sure it was yet another mis-stamp at the factory as there is no evidence of the barrel being changed. The gun was a bank manager's desk gun. Looked un-fired.
I do know one thing, my wife only paid $350 OTD for the 10-15 she traded and she got a steal on this 5 incher. LGS did it because he knew the newer HB revolver would sell fast where this would sit waiting for someone like my wife.

Nothing. It is without any value. Send it to me for safe disposal. And I do mean "safe" disposal . . . It will go right into the safe.

Agree the few remaining really nice ones will easily get into the $400-$500 range.
Swallowed hard and paid $495 for this one.
Looks like it was issued to the desk sergeant and lived in his desk drawer:

I would have parted with 5 bills gladly for one looking that good.
Nice find.

I sold this 10-5, 5 inch earlier this year for $500. The right gun to the right person. In a way I wish I still had it.

Beautiful examples of fine old S&W work. Thank you all for sharing.
But I am confused....IS there a difference between a pencil barrel and a tapered barrel? I have a Model 10-5, 4 incher, looks exactly like the pics RetiredW4 has posted (except I had the rubber Uncle Mikes grips on mine.)

It is just a matter of terminology. "Tapered barrel" is actually the correct term. But some genuine experts that I know still use the "pencil barrel" language, despite protests from some others. Some find this offensive, others shrug. I tend to be among the latter group, although I don't say, "pencil barrel."

I found a 10-5 6" today in the local pawn store along with a 4" "something". Both were tapered barrels and although I'd like a 5", the 4" caught my attention due to it's great condition.
There was some sort of stamp on the frame, but it was fairly illegible and didn't look like 10 anything. The number on the but was C 143344. Can anyone help with that?
FWIW, they had it priced at $575 and the 6" at $679.
I don't know how negotiable they are since a later model Dick Special I looked at 4-5 yrs ago was still there.

It wasn't "10 anything." It is too old for a model number. This is a postwar .38 Military & Police revolver from the late 1940s ('48 or '49?). I think it would need to be in pretty darn good shape and not refinished to be worth $575, but that is just my opinion.
Nonetheless, it would be an interesting acquisition, if you can get it for a good price. What did the stocks look like?

It's a postwar M&P or pre-model 10, those prices are way too much...

Stocks in great shape. Slight ring on cyclinder and small scratch on barrel, but otherwise the finish was great. The bluing wasn't all that shiny, almost a matte, but I believe it was orginal and not a refinish.

Sorry. I did not state my question clearly enough. I was actually wondering what the style of the stocks was. I would think they would be the early postwar Magnas with the sharp shoulder. I was curious to know if they were.
And I will say again, agreeing with nipster, the shop is way too proud of those revolvers.

I believe it had the Magna's. I wasn't sure what I was looking at, so I was mainly interested in condition. There was another one there that IIRC, didn't say Mod 10 on the frame and had a lanyard swivel on the butt.
There was yet another that was likely a pre-war .38 special.
ETA:Considering what the C 143334 is, along with it's condition, what would be an apx value for it? They can only throw me out of the store!

My 10-5 "round butt" 6 inch
Does anyone know if the 5" tapered barrel ever came in a round butt configuration? I know the 4" did, though it doesn't seem in great numbers.[/QUOTE]
Actually just puttin' you on a bit. I picked up this 10-5 at a LGS in a two-fer deal as I wanted the 4-inch 33-1 he had taken in from the same customer. LGS wanted them both gone and made an offer I couldn't refuse.
The customer he got them from had modified (i.e., nearly ruined) both by modifying the grip portion of the frame on each. LGS claimed the customer had huge hands and wanted a round butt on the 10-5 and so ground the frame and had drilled the bottom of the 33-1 frame to make some sort of extended grip fit. In the process he no doubt hurt the value of ea. revolver. The LGS wouldn't even put them out in his display case. Both came to me without any grips.
A crying shame the previous owner "modified" the revolvers that way. I put a set of aftermarket square butt grips on the 10-5 that covers the modified grip portion of the frame and they fit OK with no looseness. The rest of the 10-5 is in great shape, well above 90% I'd guess as bluing shows no wear and there is no wear line on the cylinder.
Similarly I had to put a set of Pachmeyer rubber grips on the 33-1 to cover the holes drilled in the bottom of the grip frame.
The 33-1 is the 'keeper' out of the two as I really like the J frame revolvers and have been gathering dies and brass for reloading the 38 S&W.
The future of the 10-5 is up in the air for now. It doesn't take up much space but Model 10s are just not my cup of tea.

I would think with inflated gun values of today it would be worth $375-$450 depending on condition.

$425!
This one from 1962... a little more.
A five inch K frame is ALMOST as good lookin' as a five inch N frame.

As long as we're asking and answering, what would the value be of a four screw, no dash model 10 (stamped as such) with a 5" barrel and numbered diamond grips. No box, tools or papers. I very rarely see this model on any of sale or auction sites. I would rate it at NRA "fine" condition, maybe a little better. Thanks and happy new year. Picture will follow.

I'd like to know also, as I have this no dash 4" model 10 with numbered diamond grips.
Condition is like NIB. It was given to me for helping at a gun show.

I'm not familiar with the 10-15, I have two 10-14's and I thought they were the last Model 10.
5" round butt 10's do exist, technically this is an M&P made in 1956 right before the change to model numbers but I still believe rb 5" 10's were made after 1957.
This one is marked E. Cleveland Police on the blackstrap. It's one of my favorites, just need some original diamond Magnas for it

I paid $400 for this post-war M&P about one year ago. It's got a little finish wear but the patina from honest use adds to it's character.

I would love to find a "shooter" grade 6" model 10 and have it round butted, but my 5" fills the bill just fine. I do like 6" M&P's and 10's a little more than 4" taper barrel models. I have a 6" beater 10-5 that I "rebuilt" but I probly wouldn't bother to pay to get it round butted.

I paid $500 for this NIB 1962 10-5 2 years ago. I thought it was high, but I bought it anyway. We've all been there...right? I've never been sorry.

I miss the days of nice condition $150 police corrections and security trade in 10's........and those are the ones that were never supposed to be worth anything
The last lower priced ones I saw were the late model 10's that SOSS had for $200.

I think that a shooter grade M&P (or Model 10) is a $250-350 gun. S&W made millions of these. As always, pristine examples may sell for more, especially with original boxes, grips, etc.

For all you new guys out there, I'm afraid the SaxonPig is spreading it pretty thick. "Pencil barrel" and "tapered barrel" are other names for the "standard barrel". The other barrel type on the Model 10 is the "Heavy Barrel", as found on the 10-6. I have also seen the AR barrels referred to as "pencil" for standard barrel.

To jump into the fray - how about a 1958-shipped M&P (not marked M10) with a 3 inch tapered (-pencil-) barrel?
No - have not gotten around to having it lettered. Did just get some diamond magnas for it, not shown in pic.

That looks like a 3" Heavy Barrel from the same era as the grips....probably swapped onto the gun many years later. I would advise not to letter it but to enjoy it....should be about perfect for carry.

My transitional M&P. S prefix serial number. Paid $300.00 for it. But that was back in September of 2010. I'm sure the price would be higher on it right now.

gkitch - my photo skills are limited, and the pic does not show the barrel contour well.
It IS a tapered 3", and has not been cut - all markings perfectly centered and barrel to frame fitment is as perfect as I can determine, and finish is original and evenly worn.
Shoots and carries great - it's got my curiosity up. Not supposed to exist according to SCSW except for a short reference to '3" special order'.
