Question Matching Non-diamond stocks on a circa 1964 Model 10

C prefixed no-milage .38 with some minor finish drama seemed like a good possible project gun. Not even a turn line! Great timing, good trigger. Didn't even worry that the grips seemed to be replacements. At least they weren't aftermarket. But...Surprise! Numbers matching stocks!

So was the large diamond slowly phased out with completion in 1968 or is something else going on here? Hard to imagine this revolver sitting gripless in the factory for roughly four years.

The directives to eliminate the diamond around the escutcheon and escutcheon nut on all styles of of stock except oversize (target) were issued on October 11, 1965 and January 11, 1966. Non-diamond stocks began to appear in 1966. If your Model 10 was shipped in 1964, it would have had diamond stocks.

Not likely to get this one lettered. The less than perfect finish makes this one much more "shooter grade" given it's common nature.

But the directive dates are close enough eliminate puzzlement. Thanks for the clarification!
