Need you opinions about grips

Some of you guys might remember my question about the model 10 and 15. Well I got a Model 19-4 4 inch for Christmas. The gun is almost perfect (turn ring doesn't go through blueing) but the grips probably aren't original because they have some nicks. I want a good new pair and I'm looking at Herrett or Ahrends. Which one do you like more? I know Herrett is a more custom type of grip but I'm not sure if they are worth it.

Next part of my question which style? The Herretts I'm looking at are Jordan Trooper,Custom Shooting Star, Custom Shooting Master and Roper. The Ahrends I'm looking at are the Retro Target grips. Which one do you like?

I'll be shooting almost only .38s out of it so recoil is not an issue.
Pics are welcome and I do not want rubber/plastic grips.

Do yourself a favor, get Hogue Monogrips w/fingergrooves. They're awesome. You can choose a ton of configurations, wood type, etc. They feel custom made.

As long as you're asking for opinions, mine is that factory-made diamond target stocks with the football cutout are the most comfotable and nicest looking stocks ever made. Trouble is, they quit making them back in the sixties. They show up on ebay from time to time and, if you can get a set, you won't regret it. I have them on all of my revolvers, even though they're "correct" on only one of them. Those extra stocks are just waiting for the right guns to clamp themselves onto.

I think those are what I have on my gun although I don't remember the diamond on them but they probably had them. Is the "football" supposed to be a thumb rest? My thumb sits right on the edge of it so it makes me adjust.
Ill look around for a new pair if I decide I don't want the two I'm looking at.

Of those you are considering,I'd choose the Retro Targets. Slimmer than factory targets,MUCH slimmer than Jordans! I've had both,fwiw.

I have been reading this and am a little confused by the OP. Now, don't take that as a slam--I am seeing a bit of confusion in the question.
What style do you like the best--Target, Magnas, Big, Slim, Kearsarge, Ropers, all and more?
Being somewhat of a panel junkie-- I have found thru experience, both good and bad---that all grips are not what they are advertised.
I have bought my share of grips off the net--trying to find good & inexspensive wood----I don't, from my experience, think the two exist, together.
Factory and Factory maker direct are some good ones---I would go with them first if you can determine what you want.
A nice set from a custom guy like Keith Brown will always be prettier and classier, but they cost what they cost.
I hope I have not slammed you or said anything that hurts feeling--but I am confused.

My hands are smaller. On a K frame, I always preferred the Magna grips with the Tyler T Grip installed. You can't beat it. If I was shooting a J frame with the Plus P we carried, it would have to be the Hogue grips. I couldn't take the recoil from my Model 60 with that ammo.

Regarding the Magnas, I also just like wood.

Start with what you think/know will fit your hand best.
I think that is very important.
For me one of the main reasons is the right ones align my trigger finger
where I want it.
Then go to what you like looks wise.
Grips are very subjective what works for one may be the worst possible for another.I really like various factory ones with smooth targets being among "my" favorites.

No man can tell another what looks and feels best. We each have to decide for ourselves.

But since you asked, in the past 35 years I have gone through every style and type of aftermarket stock there is available. I tried going bigger, I tried going smaller, I tried smooth, I tried finger grooves, I tried them all. You know what I decided worked best for me?








Now, I confess to a fondness for ivory and a few of my pistols wear smooth ivory stocks but in anything bigger than 38 Special I need checkering for a firm grip.





But by and large my handguns wear original wood. My only rule is that if the barrel is shorter than 4" the large, target style stocks look too big to my eye. So the 3.5" M27-2 pictured above looks right to me with the Magnas. The 4" 25-5 seen above looks good with the target stocks. Around 1974 S&W started putting targets on all 27s including the short ones but IMO that was a mistake.

A 4" M19 would have come with target stocks. My choice would be to shop around and find a set with really nice grain and be done with it. To me, the Hogues and others somehow look out of place.

Try some "stag grips" with a T-grip from our memeber "Executioner".........I just got a couple of sets for an 18-4 and a 1948 K-22 (didn't have the origional grips/ rubber). There are a number of picture threads here ........ of his grips. NICE stuff.

He can do "no bark".... which is as close to Ivory as I'll ever get!!!!!LOL

Like the others have said, buy one set of each ($$$) and try them all.
Then you will know for certain what's right for you and then sell the rest of them right here :-/.

FWIW, I have the retro target grips on a couple of L Frames and a Mdl 10. They look good, fit perfectly and feel good. Better yet they fit my medium size hand perfectly. I love them.

Sorry for any confusion. Im not really looking for inexpensive wood unless $100 is inexpensive. Just looking for good grips with good wood. I like target style grips just not a huge fan of the factory target grips I have.

I want you guys to answer these questions if they're easier.

Would you buy Herretts, Ahrends or a different company?

Is there any reason to not go with one of the styles I said I like?(Sometimes there is a lot of people not liking one type of grip)

Your best bet for your price is Hogue wooden grips, IMO. But I'm not sure your hand is the same size as mine. See whether you can get your hands around some of the grips you are asking about. If your hand is like mine, the only non-custom wooden grips that are likely to fit your hand are Hogue, or factory Magnas with a Tyler. Nothing else off the shelf, in wood. In plastic, Rogers/Safariland are very good, in rubber both Hogue and Pachmayr Presentation. But if your hand is larger, the answer may well be different.

I've tried thm all too but have decided that the factory magnas w/a TGrip work best on my K Frames, even with my XL hands.

Ill try to hold some if I can. Thats the reason I thought about Herrett grips because they would be made for my hands but I don't have much experience with revolvers or grips so I don't know.

I like Ahrends a lot.
I just wanted some ropers and kearsarge so I am going the custom route---I have large palms and cadet fingers.
I will/am using Keith Brown. Examples of his work attached.

I've never liked the looks of T-Grips on model 19s. I might be a little picky on the grips

I recommend the Herrett Shooting Star's. I have an old pair from when they were offered as a standard product by Herrett, great grips. I assume the custom shooting stars are the same basic grip, just fitted to your hand. Nothing like making a great product better.
