Price check: Smith model 27
I'm looking at an 8 3/8" barreled model 27. Gun is advertised with a light turn line and almost flawless otherwise. Correct grips. Early model with "S" prefix (1970). NO box/paperwork. What is the going rate on this gun in your area? Did these guns ever come from the factory with a gold inlay on the barrel lettering? Thanks guys...

More than likely the gold lettering was done later. There are kits available so you can do this yourself. Use to be quite popular.
I don't know what to tell you on the value of the long barrel but M27s are hot right now.

I paid $600 for one recently in similar condition. I think up to $700 for the long tuber is still fair.

That's probably a Model 27-2 if it has an S prefix serial number and dates to about 1970. I would guess a realistic price lies between $700 and $950 for a longnose version of that model in 95% condition or a little better.
A Model 27-1 gets a bit of a collector kick because there are fewer of those. Prices for the 27s will vary regionally around the country as well as based on condition.
I think the gold lettering comes out with acetone if you don't like it.

This is indeed a 27-2 and dates to 1970.
I'm looking to make a package deal on this 27 and a 4" pinned/recessed blued model 29-2 (1980) in similar condition (at least 95% + on both as stated by seller). Price pending inspection is $1500 for the pair. Yes, strong $ but I'm selling a 6" python to fund the purchase, so it's no money out of my pocket and I get 2 for the price of 1!! This sound like a fair deal to you guys?
Here are the guns:

By the way, this forum ROCKS. I had been going to the "other" smith forum previously. I MUCH prefer this site. Go ahead and pick 'em apart guys!!

I picked this up this weekend at a gunshow...$850.00
Dealer had mostly black guns and semi-autos.
27-2 about 76-77 vintage box and all the goodies.
I really think it is factory fired only.
I have some magnas that I'm gonna put on it. The targets just
don't feel right on the 3.5 inch.

That sounds like too good a deal to pass on. Without boxes and docs it isn't a screaming deal, but it doesn't seem like a bad deal either. Especially since you are only giving up a Colt's Patent gun to pay for it.
The 27 is the cream of the crop among handguns!

i agree with Jack, although if the Colt is 98% or better I may keep it. They are going crazy in price and probably will keep going up. If it's an older one and high condition I'd leave it in the safe.
The Smiths may not be high condition so it's a **** shoot.
If 27s less than 98 trade away.

I think $1500 is a good price for the two S&W revolvers you mentioned if they are in really good condition.

The colt is in about 90% condition with NO box/papers. I sold it this morning for $1450. Pretty stupid $ for a gun in that condition. It is a really cool gun, but the smith's are just as darn nice in my opinion. Ill post some pictures of the guns if I end up buying them tonight. Thanks guys.
