Default Teeth ground to nubs

You know what makes me grind my teeth? To pick up a nice S&W revolver that looks pretty decent overall and then discover some (expletive deleted) has used unprotected pliers to tighten the extractor rod, leaving gouge marks on the rod knob! Why do people do stuff like this????

So - what are the chances of finding a replacement extractor rod in excellent shape for a K frame .22 revolver made in about 1981? Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Jack

"Bubba" ruins far more guns than honest use and wear ever did.

You can learn a lot about a person's habits (good or bad) by looking at:
1) the screws, rods and pins on their guns.
2) the heads of bolts and screws on their cars.

Feel free to add to the list. I'm sure there are many more.

My cousin taught at Trinadad gun school and was a gunsmith for many years. He said several times that he rarely works on a broken gun. Nearly all the repairs he did were fixing something that some ham-fisted kitchen table gunsmith had torn up and then brought it to him to fix.

I'm not sure Bubba was trying to tighten the rod, but to loosen it going the wrong direction. Sometimes I think Colt had their cylinder rotation right, since the extractor rod went "righty tighty." I have the dang tool and I still stop and question myself sometimes!

And to make matters worse, you have to remember which gun you are working on, because in about 1959, they changed the right hand threads to left hand threads.

Default Fortunately for me

I have a pipe vise in my garage that's dandy at twisting off barrels, if you don't mind the gouge marks. Fortunately I realized early on that I ain't no gunsmith.

Thanks to all of your for your suggestions. I think I'll check with Numerich for both the part and the tool.

At a gunshow last summer, one of the vendors had some very nicely made extractor-rod-holder tools he made up, by machining a couple of semi-circular pieces & welding them onto a set of vicegrips. Unfortunmately (as I pointed out to him) an old-fashioned wooden clothespin clamped in a vise does the same thing-- and is a lot cheaper.
