Default New to me 36 info needed

I recently purchased this little 36 and I am curious about a couple things.

It is Mod 36 no dash with a SN#376144, could I get an estimated ship date?

Do the stocks appear to be correct for this piece?

Pics below:

Thanks, Bob

i agree with the '63 ship date, possibly '64, but it definitely should have diamond magnas. those grips are off a '68-up gun.

here is what they should look like:

the right grip panel should have a serial number stamped in it, if you take it off, and look at the backside.

welcome to the forum!

Thanks for the update. I thought it should have diamond grips also, but I figured I would ask the experts.

The grips are not SN# stamped, I took them off this morning to look.

at some point in the "non-diamond magna" era they stopped stamping the serial number in them. i have a model 60 with the non-diamonds that don't have a number on them. if i recall correctly, it was made in 1993, or so. but, i guess they could also be factory replacement grips that never had a number stamped in them. they look like they are in about perfect condition.

Hi Bob
Nice little Chiefs Special. Ship dates are always unpredictable without a letter. According to Roy, CS #3538xx shipped in September, 1964. So, while 376144 could have shipped in 1963, 1964 is also possible, or even 1965.

In any case, it definitely should have diamond stocks on it. Serial stamping of stocks in the 1970s became iffy. I have at least one K frame from that era wearing its original stocks that are not serial number marked. It seems probable that the stocks on your CS are from at least the 1970s. The photo posted by ar15ed shows what yours should look like.

Jack

Added: the serial number on the aforementioned CS from 1964 does have serialized stocks on it. They are diamond Magna stocks.
