Default Date of manufacture? Model 60

Can someone please tell me when my Model 60 (no dash, 3" barrel) was manufactured? It's stamped 56XXX (the first "X" is really there, but the 2nd and 3rd Xs are actually numbers). It also appears to be stamped with a "11" below write below the 56XXX. Any other information would also be helpful. Thank you!

Hello
You need to take off those oversize stocks and look on the bottom of the grip frame. That is where the correct serial number is located. The number you gave us from the yoke area is not correct.
I'm not sure about a no dash gun with a 3" barrel. I'm not too familiar with the Model 60 variants. All the early examples I can remember seeing had 2" barrels. I know the 3" heavy barrel square butt guns were stamped 60-1. There were not very many of them made, IIRC.

Thanks Jack...I don't like the grip it came with, because it actually blocks one of the rounds from coming out, and so I have to turn the carousel to get the round out.

I have the box, and there's a sticker on the box that says the following:

S/N: AEU8285
Model No: 60
Barrel: 3
Fin: S
Stock: SB

Does that help? Unfortunately, there's some torn-off paper covering the Product Code.

Okay. That makes sense now. The no-dash production continued until, I think, 1988, when the dash 3 came out with changes to the yoke. The dash 1 and dash 2 were special items that were made concurrently with the no dash guns. I was thinking this was an early no dash which (I think) all had 2" barrels. Your gun dates from around 1984. It should have a square grip frame.

Yes. Those oversize grips are a problem for loading and unloading. That is why, on the larger frame guns (K and N), S&W came out with the relieved target stocks in the late 1950s. The good news is that J frame square butt stocks are not hard to find. I have a couple in my extra grips box. I think both are diamond stocks and quite worn. But you can probably find some correct nice ones on line or here on the WTB/WTS list.

Hi,
I was recently gifted a Model 60 and was wondering about it.
The serial number on bottom of the grip frame is ABR2xxx and on the side of the grip frame is '281xx on one side (with a C3 stamped above it) and 7583 on the other side.
The stamped s/n on the cylinder frame matches the 281xx.
I would appreciate any info.

Thanks,
Kurt

Serial number ABR2xxx looks like 1983.

281xx would be an assembly number, as the crane and frame are fitted parts and need to stay together.
