Optics on a 17?
Is there a way to mount, semi-temporarily, a red dot type sight on my 8 3/8" Mod 17? I will NOT drill holes...

The shortest firearm I own with a scope on it, has a 20" barrel. I suspect there may be a mounting system that will fit on your revolver without any additional holes but personally, I wouldn't even bother. My eyes don't work as well as when I was younger but I haven't succumbed to optics on any handgun, even those with long barrels. Optics on a handgun make it into something I feel it was never designed for and the holsters don't fit too well either. Save some money and try it without the optics, I've shot other peoples handguns with optics and I wasn't very impressed, perhaps you could try someone's revolver with optics before making the investment, maybe you'll agree.
Good luck,
Steve

I spent hours looking for a no-drill base for an N frame Smith and came up with nothing.

B Square does make a no drill base that fits older Mod 17's, but it is secured only at the rear "T" Slot and the front screw. It is very easy to knock it out of alignment and with that large of a sight on top it doesn't stay secure. If you use one of the newer heads up type red dots like a Burris Fast Fire II, it may hold O.K. I had a Millet Red Dot on my 17-4 for awhile, but it didn't work satisfactorily. Although it really did improve my shooting.

Check out Weaver products. I believe they still make the model that I use on mine. It's a Model 307 for K frames. I really wish they made one for N frames but they don't. I have used this on my 686 with some pretty stout loads and it holds fast. It has a special "T" which goes into the rear sight slot plus it's held in place out front via a pressure fit (it's a one piece base). If I get a chance I'll take a pic and post it. I currently have a Burris fastfire on it (on my 17-2) and it's freakin' awsome! My 56 yo eyes really like it. TC

I had that same Weaver base on my 17 no dash for many years. It held a Bushnell 2x scope. Worked fine.
I killed a lot of Rock Chucks with that outfit.

I have the same B-square as H Richard on my17-6 and love it. It does not have clamps but utilizes the two existing rear sight screws . I have seen these on ebay along with the weaver and other no-gunsmithing mounts for k-frames . Try typing in S&W scope . They do seem to pop up fairly often . I also have an 8 3/8 17-3 that I drilled and tapped 20 some years ago that is my main squirrel gun and don't regret it .
