Herrett's "Detective" Stocks arrived today!
I have to say, I spent a bundle on these and had to wait quite some time, but it was well, well worth it. My M36 now fits my hand like the proverbial "glove" and points perfectly. I'd say the proportions are "ideal" for concealment with no more than is absolutely necessary to give a secure grip (I asked them to make them so that they didn't extend more than a quarter inch below the bottom of the frame; just enough purchase for my pinky finger). Finally, I don't know how the heck they got these to fit my Chief's so well, but the grip-to-frame fit is damn near perfect. I made sure to give them a call and thank them.
Pictures to follow, as soon as I can borrow the missus' camera and finish my shift tonight. I promise.

I love Herrett's stocks, and have several sets. I've never had a set of the Detectives, though. Looking forward to your pictures; might have to order a set for my 3" Chief. Glad to hear that the fit and finish are still 1st-rate.

OT, but this cheerful post makes me wonder what has become of member Joanie. She had a fantastic collection of Herrett's for her wheelguns.

This thread should never have been started until the pictures were ready.

Told ya I was gonna post 'em.
Just my opinion, but square butt is definitely the way to go in a J-frame. These wouldn't have looked nearly as nice if they were made for a RB.
Sorry if the photos are a little subpar. I went right to bed after I took these because I was so tired.

Those look nice. I always liked the look of the Herrett "Shooting Ace" grips, esp the skip-checkered ones, but unfortunately they don't fill in behind the triggerguard the way I like in a revolver grip.
There's not too many off-the-shelf grip options for square-butt J's. Not to steal your thunder, but here's a pic of my SB Chief with a custom set of boot grips Jim Badger made up for me last summer. Unfortunately since then he's declined to make something similar for a couple other people-- guess I caught him on a good day.

Thank you, and no worries. I've said it before, but I really like how those grips look on your M36.
Believe it or not, the biggest thing that sold me on Herrett's was their customer service. They were happy to answer all of my questions in detail whereas Jim Badger, not to disparage him or anything, was a little curt with me. Maybe I just caught him on an off day, like you said.

I've installed vintage Herrett's on my 19-4. They're perfect.

Here's a very old pair of Herrett's on a 1950 (pre 24). Possibly from the early 1960's (the stocks)?

Thank you for the photos, gents. That 19-4 and Pre-24 look really handsome with their respective grips.
Once this weather clears up a bit, I'd like to take some outdoor pictures of my Chief's Special to really make the grain in the grips stand out. The photos I took really don't do them justice.
Dammit... Now I'm going to have to reconsider if I wanna get Pachs for my 686 or Jordan Troopers...

OK, I'm going in...ordering a set of Dets for my square-butt. Gonna be checkered, though.

Huzzah! I know it'll be a while before we get to see them, but I assure you the wait will be well, well worth it. Please show us the photos once they're in hand.

Those look very good. I no longer own a Model 36, but would love to put a set on my Model 49.

I've wondered also. I sent her a PM a while back but never got an answer. Miss her comments and nice collection of guns and grips.

Thank you! The grain is outstanding. Herrett's really knows how to select their woods.
Of course, I also encourage you to take the plunge and get a set. I think you'll very be happy with how they turn out.

If anyone's curious, this is how they look after more than two years of daily carry. All they get is a periodic buff with Obenauf's, more often in the Summer months. Aside from a very tiny crack propagating at the top right corner near the cylinder latch, they're none the worse for wear.
That screw is also a pain to keep from rusting unless I stay right on top of it with Break-Free CLP.

I really like the grips. Nice grain. I had the same issue with the screw rusting. Found a stainless replacement at my local ACE hdwe.

Funny you should mention getting a stainless replacement screw at Ace, because I was thinking the same exact thing. You wouldn't happen to remember the length, thread and pitch by any chance, would you?
Edit: Also, that wouldn't happen to be a Shiba Inu as your avatar, would it?

NO idea as to size....was a few years back. Bring your grips and find one in SS that screws in properly....what I did.
No my avatar is THE biggest malamute we ever owned....Mr. Wiley. He was 120# in his prime. Made our huskies look small.
He missed very few meals in his life...food and the pursuit of food was his life.

Sounds like my girl (black and tan Shiba). "Is that food?! I like food!" One of the most shameless beggars I've known. It also explains why she learns like a quantum physicist when treats are involved. The "eyebrows" (spots above the eyes) threw me off, but apparently it seems to be a Spitz thing.
I'll post more info on the screw dimensions for everyone's benefit when I get around to stopping at ACE.

So, I finally figured out what type of screw Herrett's uses with their Detective stocks. If anyone's interested, it's a really oddball sized 5-40 x 27-32" fillister head. Needless to say, my local Ace doesn't carry anything with a 5-40 thread.
